Careen is a qualified social worker with a BA (hons)/DiPSW which was acquired between 1992-1995 at the University of Hertfordshire. She later completed a PgDip in Social Work Values and Research between 1998-2000 whilst working with young people in trouble. Her social work experience includes YOT social worker, Child Protection Assessment team, Leaving Care, Fostering and Adoption as well as residential work with children/young people and adults with mental health. She also taught on a sessional basis at the University of Bedfordshire on the youth and community programme.
Careen was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire between 1999-2004 where she taught on the BSc in Criminal Justice/Diploma in Probation Studies. She contributed to teaching Law, Reflective Practice, Values and Ethics and took on tutorial responsibilities for trainee probation officers. In 2004 she moved from the criminal justice team to lecture part time (whilst working part time in practice) on the social work programme, teaching on the children and family module and participating in teaching at PQ level and preparation for practice as well as tutorial responsibilities. Careen came to UEL in 2005 where she has developed a range of practice learning opportunities to meet the growing numbers of social work students on the BA and MA qualifying programme. She also contributes to teaching on preparation to practice modules and has responsibility for organising the workshop series for year 1 and year 2 students. Careen also has the remit of developing partnerships between UEL and many private, voluntary and statutory organisations. Careen has many years experience of practice teaching social work students, she is committed to supporting individuals to develop their professional skills, values and identity through reflection, understanding of their learning styles and using supervision to enhance their learning..
