Brief biography

Dr Jassodra Maharaj studied BSc Economics, Sociology and Statistics at the University of Surrey, before completing an MA in Economics at the University of Manchester and a PhD at the University of Birmingham. She worked as an economics lecturer and researcher at both Bradford and Leeds universities before joining UEL Business School. Dr Maharaj has acted as a consultant to Maxwell Stamp plc

With globilization becoming more and more influential, I am interested in analyzing the ways in which the new world environment may provide an uneven impact of the development of  marginal countries.

Abstracts

Abstract from paper titled- Agriculture and Development; Prospects and Dilemmas;

In a high number of developing countries the agricultural sector has a central role in the development process and the challenges facing agricultural develoment has both national and international implications. Moreover in recent years there is much concern for the maintenance of the ecosystems which is featured high on the agenda particularly as the pressures for agricultural growth occurs with increasing global population and according to the FAO's agricultural department, there are inevitable links between agriculture and the ecosystem. However a positive outlook by the FAO stated that in 2030 there is hope that the average arable land per person is expected to increase a little allowing the opportunity for more land to be cultivated in a sustainable way. This paper exploes the the links between argriculture and development and which policy objectives need most emphasis
