David has taught HRM and HRM related subjects in the Business School at UEL for over 10 years. Prior to this, and on graduating from the LSE with a Masters in Industrial Relation, he worked in the reseach function of a number of key trade unions and subsequently held senior reseach, management and directoral posts (editorial director) in the specialist HR publishing company - Industrial Relations Services -(IRS- precursor to the online specialist HR data provider Xperthr.com) The company successfully produced independently researched information and data covering the whole field of HRM, in the form of journals, newsletters, conferences and contract reseach for both employers, employees, trade unions and Government departments. As editorial director he was responsible for the editorial direction, strategy and content of the portfolio of publications and research documents. In addition he was, on a day-to-day basis, responsible for the management and performance of around 60 professional editorial/research, information, and support staff.
Programme leader for the recently validated specialist BA Honours Degree in HRM and also link tutor for the BA Hons Degree in Business Management with our partners Barking and Dagenham College.
Main areas of academic interest include the contribution of HRM policy and practice to organisational success and goal achievement and in particular the contribution of such concepts as employee engagement, involvement, communicatiion, consultation and participation to this process
Outside of UEL, amongst other interests, Vice chair of the Governing body of a local secondary school, having previously been chair of the personnel committee with responsiblities for key staff apppointments, performance, pay and discipline.
Examining - with Dr Z. Senyucel and a research student - the introduction, implementation and impact of HR policies and practices in the National Audit Office of Malawi.
Researching impact of establishment and operation of discrete HR function into management structure of secondary school(s) with particular reference to staff practices, procedures, performance and goal achievement at the school.
