Programme leader for Extended Degree in Business and Law.
The programme is the product of a collaborative venture between the Business School, the University's School of Law, and Newham VI Form College ("New Vic"). Students on the course study over the university's two semester year. In the first semester they study Contemporary Business Issues; prepare a basic business plan - a Business Feasibility Study - for an enterprise of their choice, and are introduced to some basic IT techniques. In the second semester they go on to study the basic techniques and concepts associated with Finance and Accounts, Economics; and the basic principles and institutions of he English legal system- the Law. Succesful completion of all these units over both semesters achievd through a combinaion of presentations, assignments and exams gives students automatic entry to the first year of the UEL BA honours degree of their choice in either business, finance and acounts, economics, or law. The course is jointly delivered, assesed and monitored by staff from both institutions.
The Extended Degree is therefore aimed at offering the opportunity to study a full time honours degree to students who may have studied to A-level but whose qualifications are not necessarily appropriate for their chosen degree; students who may not have gained the required grades for university entrance, but who do not wish to resit their A levels; and mature students with work experience, but few, if any, formal educational qualifictions.
Subject areas of interest include employment relations, employee participation, consultation and involvement, contemporary HR issues including flexible working, work organisation, recruitment and selection, diversity. Also grievance and disciplinary procedures, and collective bargaining Learning and teaching - particularly in area of transition from school/college to university.

"To be a successful businesswoman, you've got to be hard working, positive, and energetic, but you've also got to learn the tools of the trade. My degree at UEL wasn't just about getting a qualification, it was about learning the key skills I needed to start up a solid business"
