John was born and grew up in Kibumaye Tarime, Tanzania in 1959. After schooling for 14 years he began his teaching profession in business studies in 1979. Six years later he resumed his studies at Mzumbe University (formally IDM Mzumbe) from where he graduated in 1988 with an Advanced Diploma in Certified Accountancy (ADCA).

In 1989 he joined Tanzania Institute of Accountancy (formally Dar es Salaam School of Accountancy, DSA) as a Tutor in accounting & business taxation. After teaching for about four years heI re-joined Mzumbe University to study for a two-year MBA degree programme. John was then employed by Mzumbe University as a full time Lecturer in Accounting & Finance from the end of 1994 to August 1997. During his services at Mzumbe heI privately qualified as a Public Certified Accountant III, CPA (T)

John joined the University of Birmingham in the UK in September 1997 to pursue a 3-year PhD study programme in performance management. Before going back to Mzumbe University in 2004 heI worked as a freelance lecturer in accounting and finance in and around Birmingham for about three years. John came back to UK in 2006 to resume his freelance lectureship assignments before joining The University of East London in late 2008 as a full time Senior Lecturer in Accounting & Finance.

Outside the academia, John has always been a staunch supporter of his local football team back home - Simba Sport Club (Tanzania) and Liverpool FC (UK). However, now in East London he has demonstrated his partisanship by switching to the West Ham FC.
