In 2004 the School opened its new AVA building, designed by one of our own architects and officially opened by internationally renowned Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry. The building offers dedicated, purpose-built studios and workshops, together with impressive exhibition space, providing an ideal venue for our annual Fashion, Fine Art, Architecture and Design shows.
The building also incorporates an extensive, specially equipped gallery installation space, which stages exhibitions of work not only by UEL students but also by leading artists and designers. The gallery was inaugurated with a show by renowned artist Richard Wilson, a Research Fellow in the School, and has also featured works such as The Kiss by international film-maker John Smith, the first time the film had been shown in this format in the UK.
In addition to the AVA studios and workshops Fine Art programmes have access to exhibition facilities at Trinity Buoy Wharf, and for a second academic session we have permanent studio space on this inspirational site for 24 undergraduate and MA students. These studios are newly built with stunning views across the river to the Millennium Dome and Canary Wharf.
Graduates from the School regularly exhibit both in the UK and overseas, and many are now running their own practices or studios.
