Applied Sport Sciences Research Group (ASSRG)

Although the research group is still very much in the early stages of development there have been some notable achievements in 2011.  In addition to producing a number of peer-reviewed papers and book chapters the group was also visible at two European conferences (Liverpool and Madeira).  Group members have consolidated links with academics in institutions in both the UK and overseas which we hope will enable us to diversify our research activities in 2012.  Lindsay Bottoms travelled to Australia this winter to complete research at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Aims/objectives of the group

The group's research programme aims to focus on how sport and physical activity impact on social, psychological and physiological outcomes. Adopting a range of methodological approaches the group will:

Investigate psychological and physiological responses to sport and human performance in elite and recreational athletes.

Investigate psychological and physiological responses to sport and physical activity in society.

Engage with local providers to implement and evaluate community-based sport intervention projects.

We aim to

1) significantly enhance our external research funding applications and increase our output in peer-reviewed publications,

2) increase collaborative work with other HEI’s, NGB’s, UEL research groups and institutes and local sporting organisations

3) recruit, supervise and ensure completion of PhD submissions. The group will achieve these aims through the adoption of an inclusive, collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach to research.

In support of these aims the ASSRG will seek to access money from sources such as the National Institute for Health Research, Big Lottery Fund and Sport England.

We will establish enough research active staff in the group to enable submission on a consistent basis to REF activities under the ‘Sports Related Research’ unit of assessment.
