There are a number of developments underway which have been discussed at institutional committee level and at project meetings so many of you may already be aware of them, but to ensure that everyone is as up to date as possible, it is hoped the following will be informative and helpful:
E-Submission: A project is currently underway to implement UEL’s targets for E-submission, marking and return of students’ assessment electronically, via Turnitin/Grademark. There are numerous benefits for our students and a recent email from Sue Harrison invited colleagues to attend a showcase to find out how this process will work. Please try to attend one of these sessions. The Outstanding Student Experience plan set targets for the implementation of electronic submission, marking and feedback of student coursework. These targets are:
20% by Semester A 2011-12.
40% of by Semester B 2011-12.
At least 75% by Semester A 2012-13.
These targets apply to all relevant coursework. We recognise that academic and administrative colleagues will value staff development, in order to support this important transition in practice. To this end, we are running a number of showcase sessions on electronic submission and feedback. These sessions will offer staff an overview of Turnitin Grademark and encourage questions and discussions of the process.
Come along to one of the weekly showcase sessions, they will be held at the following times:
Friday 16 December -11-12pm in BS3.12, Docklands
Monday 9 January -12-1pm in RBG.16, Stratford
Thursday 12 January - 10-11am in DH 1.23, Duncan House
Monday 16 January - 2-3pm in KD1.28, Docklands
Wednesday 25 January - 10-11am in RBG.16, Stratford
Thursday 2 February - 10-11am in EB1.39, Docklands
In addition to these sessions we will be working closely with individual schools to devise a rollout plan and training schedule for Semester B. We are building online resources and materials for staff and students and your contributions would be valued. If you have any questions please email s.harrison@uel.ac.uk.
We hope to see you at one of the above sessions.
Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) – UEL’s Professional Standards Framework: The HEA has now launched its revised UK Professional Standards Framework. We will be reaccrediting UEL’s highly successful Professional Standards Framework, including our PG Cert in L&T and our CPD Route in March 2012. It is critical that colleagues continue to apply for Fellowship. From 2013 our HESA return will require this information. Dates of our CPD Panels and full information are available at: ttp://www.uel.ac.uk/apse/professional/framework.htm
New Virtual Learning Environment - Moodle: A decision has been made to enhance our VLE provision. We are working towards a transition to Moodle for 2012/13. Further information from UELconnect will follow.
On-Line Skills Tool: As part of our commitment to enhance the skills provision offered to students, an on-line skills tool is being developed to support academic writing. Its design is based on the award winning Info Skills and Get That Job. A wide range of colleagues have been consulted in the development of this tool and student feedback has of course played an important part in its development. It will be ready for our students in time for the new Academic Year.
Assessment and Feedback Policy: As part of the work undertaken by the Outstanding Student Experience Programme Board, we are working towards introducing an Assessment and Feedback Policy. This will incorporate E-submission and feedback; will respond to NUS proposals for feedback and will respond to external examiner comments. Colleagues will be consulted in the coming months.
Personal Tutors: Colleagues in Schools are working hard to implement our revised approach to Personal Tutoring. Behind the scenes we continue to explore the development of an integrated, automated process for Tutors to receive information on their tutees’ assessment and attendance activity.
