  •  Mozilla Firefox

Enabling Cookies
Access Options from the Firefox Tools menu. Select the section labelled Privacy and make sure Accept Cookies from Sites is ticked or “uel.ac.uk” should be added to the list of exceptions.

Clearing the Cache
To ensure that saved files are updated: This is one of a number of settings that are not easy to find in Firefox, because they are not included in the standard Options facility. Instead, using the browser address bar, as if surfing the web, type in about:config and press enter. Scroll down the long list of options until you find browser.cache.check_doc_frequency. This can have a value set of 0, 1, 2 or 3. Three is the default and works fine. In fact anything except “2” is ok. To change the value, double-click the line and enter the value that you want in the box that pops up.

To delete saved files (if there has been a problem): Access Options from the Firefox Tools menu. Select the section labelled Privacy and click on Clear now under the heading Private Data. Ensure that he box next to Cache is ticked and click on Clear Private Data Now.

  •  Internet Explorer

Enabling Cookies
To set cookie options: Access your Internet options (either from the Internet Explorer Tools menu, or in Windows Control Panel). Select the tab labelled Privacy and, below the slider for cookie settings, click on Advanced. Click to insert a tick in the box labelled Override automatic cookie handling. Leave the First-party cookies option as Accept, but change the Third-party cookies option to Block.

Clearing the Cache
To ensure that saved files are updated: Access your Internet options (either from the Internet Explorer Tools menu, or in Windows Control Panel). Select the first tab, labelled General, find Browsing history and click on Settings. Find the four options headed Check for newer versions of stored pages and ensure that Never is not the selected option.

To delete saved files (if there has been a problem): Access your Internet options (either from the Internet Explorer Tools menu, or in Windows Control Panel). Select the first tab, labelled General, find Browsing history and click on Delete. On the next list of options, select Delete files and select yes when asked to confirm that you want to delete the files.

  •  Safari

Enabling Cookies
To configure Safari cookie handling, click the Safari menu, then choose Preferences. Click the “Security” icon, then set Cookies to always or only from sites you navigate to.
