Lecturers Development Programme

What is the Lecturer’s Development Programme (LDP)?

The LDP is a programme which offers staff that are new to teaching in Higher Education an opportunity to develop confidence and skills to support their new role in learning, teaching and assessment.

It prepares participants to achieve the status of Fellow or Associate of the Higher Education Academy through UEL’s Professional Standards Framework (PSF), via the Continuing Professional Development pathway.

The programme emphasises practical application of theory, and supports development of relevant knowledge and skills that underpin practice. It includes micro-teaching and observations of teaching practice, and discussion of local and national policy that influences practice in HE.

Who is the LDP for?

The LDP provides valuable support for staff who are new to their role in teaching and supporting learning.  It suits both those who have a full-time role in teaching (e.g. lecturers) and those who undertake a few hours teaching each week (e.g. post graduate students and graduate teaching assistants with teaching responsibilities).

Why do I need to be a Fellow or Associate of the Higher Education Academy?

Achieving the status of Fellow or Associate of the Academy demonstrates a commitment to upholding high standards in learning and teaching practice. All staff who have a role in teaching and supporting learning are encouraged to attain this. Fellowship is a condition of probation for all academic staff. Associate status for post-graduate students represents a significant professional development milestone.

How do I decide if the LDP is for me?

Guidance is offered in the form of a ‘Decision Gate’.  This will help you reflect on any previous experience of learning and teaching with adults that you may have had. It will guide your choice of the LDP or the Post-Graduate Certificate/Diploma/MA in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. The LDP is suited to those who have less than two years previous experience of teaching, who are new to higher education, and those who wish to develop basic skills, confidence and experience in this area.

What does the LDP entail?

  • In Semester A of the academic year, participants attend ten weekly sessions
  • All sessions take place between 9.30-12.30pm.
  • In Semester B of the academic year there are a further 2 sessions, plus teaching observations and feedback
  • Produce an e-portfolio of your learning, from the assignments set over the course of the year

LDP sessions comprise a series of seminars and workshops that address aspects of basic learning theory and pedagogy. They support the development of skills related to teaching and supporting learning, and assessment. Participants construct a portfolio of their knowledge and skills, which supports their Fellow/Associate application and may extend their portfolio to apply through Accreditation of Experiential Learning (AEL) to join the PGCert/Diploma/ MA in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

Do I have to pay to participate in the LDP?

There is no charge to individuals for participation in the LDP, however, please note that if you do not attend 3 of the 10 core LDP sessions and fail to complete at least three pieces of retrieval work set by the Programme Leader, you will be asked to leave the programme and a £100 fee will be charged to your School.

When can I start?

You can join the LDP programme in Semester A.
