Support and Guidance for Students at UEL

How does UEL support Academic Integrity and Students?

Here at UEL we take academic integrity very seriously and we provide a number of resources that will help you, as a student, to embed academic integrity into your practice.

These include:

  • the UEL Plus Academic Integrity site
  • the Academic Integrity Quiz that all First Year students must complete - it's on the Student Academic Integrity UEL Plus site;
  • your first year study skills module;
  • Turnitin (a text-matching programme, available to students);
  • the Library's Info Skills On line Self Help Tool;
  • Cite Them Right - UEL's official referencing system

UEL Plus Student Academic Integrity Site

This site has been specially designed for students. You will find copies of the Academic Integrity Policy, as well as the UEL “Avoiding Plagiarism and Collusion Guide for Students” (this leaflet can be easily downloaded and kept for future reference). The Academic Integrity Quiz is also available for students via this site. All students are required to complete the AI quiz in their first year of study.

Turnitin

Turnitin is an internet-based text matching service that has been developed by a commercial company. It is used, under license, by most UK Universities, including the University of East London. Work that is submitted to Turnitin generates a Turnitin Originality report, showing which parts of it have been reproduced from which sources. Students are sometimes asked to submit their work to Turnitin via UEL Plus. Lecturers will give information to students on the use of UEL Plus and Turnitin in study skills modules.

UEL has a policy governing the use of Turnitin, click here to view it - Turnitin Policy

UEL also produces guidance for staff and students on how to use Turnitin, click below to view it Guidance on using Turnitin

Info Skills

Info Skills is the new self help tool available to all students via the Library web pages. It provides invaluable guidance and advice to students in all aspects of correct referencing, what plagiarism is and how to avoid it as well as developing your information skills. You can find it (along with other useful advice and support) on the Library’s web page, at http://www.uel.ac.uk/lls.

Academic Misconduct Investigating Panels

If you have received a letter asking you to come to an Investigating Panel - don’t
panic. It is important that you seek the advice of the Students’ Union - 020 8223 7025;
Email: studadv@uel.ac.uk

You can also download our information leaflet - Panel Guide for Students

The Panel’s role is to decide whether there has been academic misconduct and, if it concludes that there has been, to determine an appropriate penalty. The penalties (and the circumstances in which they apply) are detailed in Part 8 of our Manual of General Regulations.

In brief, the available penalties are:

• an Academic Misconduct Warning
• retake the relevant Module, with attendance, when it next runs;
• suspension from studies for one semester
• expulsion

The penalty of Expulsion is used rarely and only in relation to very serious and/or repeated
academic misconduct.

Viva Voce Interviews

Occasionally, students will be asked by their Module Leaders to have a viva voce interview as part of a school meeting when academic misconduct is suspected.  This may happen because academic staff have reason to believe that the assignment (or part of it) includes ideas, words, phrases, theories, and/or concepts that have previously been written by someone else, and that these should have been referenced to show they are not your own.  The aim of the viva voce interview is therefore to give you an opportunity to show that the assignment/essay in question is your own work.
