Good Academic Practice

Say NO to plagiarism & collusion! Say YES to Academic Integrity!

What's Good Academic Practice?

Work that you submit for assessment should be completed by you, in an appropriate academic style, referencing correctly and giving due acknowledgement using Cite Them Right. This will help you find your own voice, rather than rely on those of others.

As with all skills, you can improve your academic writing skills by practice and by drawing on the support and advice of your lecturers. Writing in your own voice and style will help you to develop a real understanding of your subject and will improve your judgement and critical thinking skills.

So what skills do I need to develop?

  • General study skills – such as note taking, research, undertaking literature searches. Make the most of the study skills literature available to you, attend study skills modules, and speak to your lecturers/tutors if you need extra support.
  • Referencing Skills – when, how and why to reference. The most important resource for referencing is Cite Them Right. You can borrow it from all our libraries, buy it at John Smith campus bookshops and consult it online 24/7 in the Campus Bookmarks list in UEL Plus.

For detailed guidance on referencing see Cite Them Rite

  • Academic Writing – how to write essays, coursework and dissertations. The Language Centre now offers all students (home and international) free support in academic writing.
  • Critical analysis and assessment – learning to argue and debate and reason, recognising balanced and unbalanced opinion.
  • Exam Techniques – how to prepare for exams, effective revision and timing
