Among other things, my current role is to:
I am also considered as UELconnect’s resident expert on virtual worlds in general, and Second Life® in particular.
My role requires skills in problem-solving, creative abilities and project management. Expertise in using a wide range of software applications and technologies is also crucial, as well as inter-personal and team-working skills.
A few years ago, I became involved in a project which explored the use of Second Life® virtual world environment. Subsequently, I was involved in making decisions on suitability of the environment in achieving learning objectives and for assessment. This included creation of some interactive applications for learning support like the virtual patient and forensic laboratory, electrophoresis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratory on both UEL HABitat and UEL Island in Second Life®. (For more information, please email me or IM: Maggs Freenote in Second Life®.)
Before coming to UEL, I worked as an ICT lecturer in Further Education (post 16) colleges and before that, I worked as a web applications and graphic designer and a programmer. Through my previous positions I gained considerable skills and expertise in using a variety of applications and technologies. I was able to pass some of these skills on to others during my teaching years and in some sense, I am still doing the same.
Recently, I started my post graduate research (PGR) programme, leading to MPhil/PhD qualification. My main topic is ubiquitous mobile learning; researching the implementation and sustenance of ubiquitous mobile devices and wireless technologies to support and enhance learning. Ultimately, I feel learning can be made more flexible, fun and accessible to all, through the effective use of innovative technologies. My hope is that I am helping to achieve that in some way through my work and my research.
