I joined UEL in September 2004 on a part-time basis whilst also teaching on the Institute of Educational Technology’s Masters in online learning. I subsequently became full-time but continued tutoring e-learning modules, including UEL’s own online staff development module on the use of learning technologies. Because of this part of my background, I have a particular interest in creative and supportive online tutoring which really enhances the student learning experience. And which is, of course, manageable and enjoyable for the tutor. To further this, I’m currently engaged in a project to create resources on the UELconnect (formerly the School of Distance and E-learning) web site for those who are engaging in online tutoring for the first time. If you’re involved in online tutoring of any type and are willing to be recorded speaking about your own experiences, do please get in touch.
As a member of UELconnect and also a qualified instructional designer, I am involved in various capacities in projects related to the development of online programmes and modules. I am, however, most interested in blended provision which allows the selection of the best combination of media and tools to suit the particular context and learning activity. With the wide range of learning technologies now available, it can sometimes be quite difficult to make these choices so, if you are uncertain, do call in an LTA and have the relevant range demonstrated to you.
I have the pleasure of being the link LTA for both Student Services and the School of Architecture and the Visual Arts, supporting them in a wide range of projects, the majority of which use ‘Web 2.0’ tools (such as blogs, wikis, podcasts and social networking sites) in innovative ways.
As well as the central staff development provision, the LTA team can provide support in relation to particular teams, individuals or technologies. If you would like to discuss your particular needs, do contact a member of the LTA team. We also support pedagogical research into e-learning at all stages from bid writing to dissemination.

At the beginning of 2009 I was awarded a UEL Teaching Fellowship. This has enabled me to engage in my current research into our students’ experience of, attitudes to, and expectations about the use of learning technologies when they first begin their studies at UEL and at subsequent stages of their studies. This data informs both generic support systems and also the selection of learning technologies at programme or module level. Contrasted with similar data collected from staff, it clearly demonstrates that there is enormous variety within both the staff and student population, with consequent implications for technology selection, support and development.
