Paralympic star inspires young East Londoners to give free sports a go
A veteran of four Paralympic Games called into SportsDock in early October as part of a special sports programme aimed at young people in East London.
Tim Prendergast, who hails from New Zealand, has an impressive tally of one gold medal and two silver medals to his name. Despite clocking a personal best time at this summer’s 800M T13 final to finish fifth, Tim showed no sign of post-Games fatigue when he visited the £21million facility for a Sportivate wheelchair basketball session.
Sportivate, which started in September, is offering a number of free sports courses for 14-25 year olds. As part of the eight week programme, people will be able to try out a variety of sports for free including paralympic sport, badminton, football, judo, cardio tennis, gymnastics and volleyball.
Speaking to UEL, Tim said: “It is great to be part of something that is engaging people through sport. I have been into a number of schools following the London 2012 Games and they are still buzzing, so it is very important to try and harness that enthusiasm. This is a really good scheme and will hopefully give people the chance to try either an Olympic or Paralympic sport.”
Tim Prendergastis part of Sporting Champions, which is a Sport England initiative bringing world-class athletes face-to-face with young people to inspire and motivate them
Graduate from UEL’s partner college in Singapore bags top prize in Vogue design competition
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) fashion design graduate, Elizabeth Soon, has won the first prize in the ‘Call for Talent’ competition organised by the Domus Academy, Milan in partnership with Vogue Talents.
Elizabeth beat over 50 applicants to win a scholarship which covers 70% of the tuition fee to pursue the Master in Fashion Design course at the prestigious Italian academy, regarded as one of the foremost design schools in the world. She was also recognised as Best Graduate from NAFA’s BA (Hons) Fashion Design programme, offered in collaboration with the University of East London.
Her striking creative work was selected, earlier this year, to show at Graduate Fashion Week, where it was noticed by influential media such as Vogue, and The Style Column, which described her collection as having ‘a powerful visual impact’.
Elizabeth said: “I am very excited to win this competition, I never expected to win the top prize at an international competition that attracts talents from around the world. It is an honour to have been selected by a jury that includes a Vogue Italia editor and it is an incredible opportunity for me to study in one of the fashion capitals of the world.”
Catherine Harper, Dean of the School of Arts and Digital Industries at UEL, said: “I am delighted for Elizabeth to have been offered this fantastic opportunity. She clearly has real talent and I have no doubt that studying at the illustrious Domus Academy will provide a huge boost to her career."
"We really value our relationship with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore and have had the pleasure of welcoming students from the academy to London. We were all extremely impressed with the students’ drive and ambition.”
Women in business – it means the world to UEL
An exciting £1.5million ERDF-funded project, which will help women entrepreneurs in London to globalise their business, was officially launched by the University of East London (UEL) at the London Transport Museum.
David Cameron called on the UK to increase overseas sales in order to boost the economic recovery. Whether it’s a textiles designer who specialises in wall murals or a self-starter who has designed an app for booking tables in Europe's top restaurants, the time is ripe for London’s women-led small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to start thinking global.
Due to run until August 2014, Make it Global, will offer London’s women-led SMEs access to an enviable list of international business networks, entrepreneurship experts within the higher and further education sector, and most importantly, the chance to start trading in a diverse range of international markets.
Funded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Make it Global is being led by the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship (CEWE) at UEL and delivered in partnership with the European Business and Innovation Centre Network (EBN), Newham College of Further Education, Kingston University and a network of strategic partners.
The Make It Global project will support 250 women-led SMEs in London to explore new market opportunities and the benefits of taking their business global. Over the next two years, the project will offer SMEs access to inspirational workshops, country-specific events, peer learning groups, international business-to-business networking and specialist innovation support to help them to achieve their growth potential.
Selena Bolingbroke, UEL Pro Vice-Chancellor, said: “The world is a small place when it comes to business, so it is time for female entrepreneurs to start broadening their horizons and thinking global. Without question, the one thing that has hindered women-led SMEs from exploring this avenue in the past has been the lack of support and specialist advice. Make it Global will make up for this knowledge gap and provide our female entrepreneurs with that all-important practical advice about how they can make the transition to go international with their business.”
“By working with our network of specialist partners and business contacts, we look forward to seeing London’s businesswomen becoming businesswomen of the world. This project marks a major milestone in our bid to become Europe’s leading institution for female entrepreneurship by 2020.”
UEL graduate launches charity to help Britain’s homeless children
Former University of East London student and ‘Streethands’ founder, Soleha Khawar, said she was shocked and troubled to discover that there were 84,000 children who had at one time run away from home. “People are amazed when I tell them this figure,” she says, “They say they just haven’t seen them. There is a real invisibility problem, once people know about the issue they really want to do something to help.”
While studying International Politics at the University of East London, Soleha found that she resided in a borough with a high level of young homelessness and set about basing her charity in Newham.
She launched Streethands with a public discussion forum about the plight of street children, staged at Sugarhouse Studios on Stratford High Street, a stone’s throw from the Olympic Park. The event attracted representatives from the NSPCC, the Muslim Youth Helpline, and Cambridge University among others.
A non-profit organization with the primary objective of preventing child homelessness caused by domestic violence, Soleha plans for Streethands to work with the families of vulnerable children - the main objective being the rehabilitation of runaway children back into their homes through the delivering of consistent one-to-one counselling, group counselling and interactive workshops.
Soleha said: “Something I really want to get across is that you don’t have to be someone special to do something like this, you just need to have empathy and drive and have the resolve to do something about these issues.”
Selena Bolingbroke, Executive Leader of UEL’s Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship, said: “Soleha is an inspiring graduate who has shown tremendous drive and determination to launch this charity, tackling this troubling and important issue at a grassroots level.”
“Women’s entrepreneurship isn’t solely about encouraging SME’s to drive profits. The organisation Soleha has set up is indicative of the vast range of benefits that women ‘going it alone’ can bring to society and the Centre will do everything it can to assist her in achieving her goals.”
UEL boxer delivers knockout performance to reach last four of national competition
Sam Bezzina, an elite sports scholarship student at UEL, has reached the semi-finals of a national boxing competition.
Sam, who is a first year student studying Sport and Exercise Science, competed in last weekend’s National Ambition Boxing Championships (NABCs) in the Class C tournament.
Fighting for West Ham Boys Amateur Boxing Club in the 57-60kg category, Sam faced stiff opposition in the form of Lewis Adams, fighting out of Essex’s Holland Shore Boxing Club. Despite an encouraging start from Adams, the UEL student proved too strong for his opponent, and emerged victorious following a flurry of uppercuts and hooks.
Speaking to UEL after his quarter-final bout, Sam said: “It was a really tough fight, but I would put it up there as one of my best performances of the season. I feel really confident now going into the semi-finals.”
David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL, said: “Sam is one of our new sports scholarship students, and he is a genuinely exciting prospect. Boxing is one of our focus sports here at UEL, so it is really pleasing to see Sam progress to the last four of a national competition. We wish him the best of luck in his forthcoming semi-final.”
The semi-finals will take place in Wales on Saturday, 24 November.

Green UEL
Problem solvers. Critical thinkers. Decision makers. These are all attributes we commonly associate with successful graduates. A recent report commissioned by the Higher Education Academy (HEA), Student attitudes towards and skills for sustainable development, brings a new angle to the traditional skills wanted by employers. In a survey of thousands of first and second year students in 2011, students indicate that they perceive skills such as ‘considering the ethical issues of your subject’ and ‘using resources efficiently’ to be increasingly important to employers. Survey results also showed that students find it relevant that such skills are developed through their university education and that more than 70% of second year students surveyed believe that sustainable development specifically should be covered by their university.
At UEL we are investigating ways to increase sustainability in the curriculum, looking at both specific course content and the skills taught throughout a degree programme. Combined with a practical Sustainability Skills programme, we want to produce sustainability literate graduates: people who can make decisions that balance human and economic well-being with respecting the Earth’s natural resources, regardless of which sector they work in.
As Alumnae and Alumni of UEL, we are interested in hearing your thoughts and experiences about education for sustainable development. What skills have you found particularly useful since graduating from UEL? What do you think could have equipped you better to embed sustainability within your work? Get in touch via email and check out the UEL website for more on this topic, including a link to the report mentioned above.
UEL Sports
After an inspirational summer of sport for UEL students, the legacy is continuing with UEL having its strongest ever start in the British University and Clubs Sports (BUCS) leagues. With many of our sports teams earning promotion last year, the 2012-2013 season was expected to be the toughest yet. But UEL’s sports clubs have risen to the competition with an overwhelming 12 teams who have not lost a BUCS league match yet!
UEL has also had its most successful cup and plate season to date with 9 teams through to the Quarter finals in their sport. Highlights include Men’s Football 1sts beating Brunel 1sts in the first round of the BUCS cup. UEL alumni Tony Brown leading the Men’s tennis team to a convincing 7-6 win over local rivals Queen Mary University 1sts. The Women’s Netball 1sts who continue to dominate their plate competition, winning by an average 46 points. Both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams progressing comfortably through each round. Finally, the very strong Men’s Volleyball team who have not lost a single set so far in the competition.
UEL sports clubs are always looking for supporters, their matches are played every Wednesday, why not come support UEL next Wednesday? Full fixtures available here http://www.uel.ac.uk/sports/clubs/clubfixtures/

Dr Ravindra Jayaratne: Lecturer in Civil Engineering at UEL

Dr Ravindra Jayaratne, Lecturer in Civil Engineering at UEL, got an opportunity to work on disaster prevention mechanisms against tsunamis with Prof. Shibayama and Dr Esteban since 2004. Being a life-member of Waseda-Yokohama National University Advanced Coastal Environment and Management Group (WAYCEM), Dr Jayaratne was invited to attend tsunami seminars and workshops in South East Asia (Phuket, 2005; Colombo, 2006), Africa (Dar Es Salaam, 2007) and East Asia (Yokohama, 2005; Tokyo 2009 & 2011), organised by the Asia-Africa Science Platform of the Japan Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS).
Dr Jayaratne carried out two extensive tsunami field surveys due to the 2011 Tohoku tsunami with the help of researchers in the Complex Disaster Research Institute in summer 2011 and 2012. During these two field surveys Dr Jayaratne has focused on the structural failure of coastal infrastructure and reconstruction process in seven cities of Fukushima and Miyagi Prefectures in North East of Japan. Dr Jayaratne’s research was supported by the JSPS, the Grant for Disaster Analysis and Proposal for Rehabilitation Process for the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami from Waseda University Research Initiative, the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation (GBSF) and the Early Career Accelerator Fund 2011/12 of UEL.
Due to invaluable UEL-Waseda research collaboration, Dr Jayaratne authored and co-authored a number of high-impact journal papers which reflects a considerable impact on the School’s REF 2014 submission. Also, this research will be indirectly beneficial for the UK’s Environment Agency, local councils and engineering consultancies in UK as they deal with flood defence schemes under high wave overtopping conditions and rebuild new coastal infrastructure under natural extreme events.
