Welcome to the Winter 2011 edition of the Alumni Network E-newsletter and an extra special welcome to our new members who graduated from UEL in November and not forgetting our new Honorary Award Holders who were presented with their awards at the same time. This was the first year that UEL held its graduation ceremonies at the O2 and it was a great success, to see videos from the ceremonies take a look at the UEL You Tube page. UEL honours KiDULTHOOD star, Noel Clarke Multiple award-winning actor, director and screenwriter, Noel Clarke, was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Arts at the University of East London’s graduation ceremony in London’s O2 yesterday. Full story

Jamie’s Ministry of Food comes to UEL As part of the University of East London’s Fresher’s Week celebrations, chefs from Jamie Oliver’s ‘Jamie’s Ministry of Food’ have been to Docklands Campus to show students how to make delicious food, quickly and inexpensively. Full story
UEL graduate brings ‘stile’ to the city with playful commission in Battersea Park UEL graduate Lucy Tomlins has won the prestigious Battersea Park Sculpture award for her piece entitled, 'Concrete Country', a representation of a twice life-sized fence and stile, cast in white concrete. Full story

Islamic Finance A Model Worth Looking into, Thursday 17th November
Hosted jointly by the Development & Alumni office and Royal Docks Business School, this event gave current students and Alumni the chance to understand the whole concept of Islamic Finance and also the chance to discuss the current World Economic Crisis. Rajah Teh who had been presented with an Honorary Law degree earlier in the week also addressed how Islamic finance helps promotes ethical business practices, something she feels that ‘the west’ could incorporate and more importantly learn from. Over 100 guests attended, including alumni, students and staff from across all UEL schools.
Occupational & Organisational Psychology Reunion, Wednesday 16th November 2011, Stratford Campus, London
A selection of UELs Occupational & Organisational Psychology graduates and students came together on Wednesday 16th November 2011, to hear presentations from Geoff Trickey a passionate advocate of applied psychology over an unusually varied professional life that has spanned the usual divisions between educational, clinical and occupational psychology and Chris Lewis for whom this was a nostalgic visit as Chris set up the occupational Psychology MSc at UEL (then NELP) in 1978 and served as the course director until 1996. This event was the 3rd Occupational and Organisation Psychology reunion at UEL, and we are sure there will be many more to follow!
The topic of conversation for the evening was Rogue trader personalities & deception in the work place, which really got the audience engaging with the speakers, and the conversation continued into the buffet reception and networking session after the talks.
Annual Fund Awards Ceremony, Wednesday 21st September 2011, Docklands Campus, London
Last Wednesday evening, UEL alumni, staff and guests gathered together to celebrate the success of our students and research staff at the Annual Fund Awards. The awards, presented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Patrick McGhee, included 5 Start-up Research Grants, 3 Sports Coaching Awards and the Women’s Entrepreneurship Award. UEL's Alumni Team would like to thank the Worshipful Company of Paviors who kindly donated towards the first Paviors Financial Assistance Grant for first Year Architecture Students. Do you work in the Creative Industries? Are you will to talk to current UEL students about how you work and how you got there? If so we would like you to be one of our "Creative Industry Experts" for our inaugral Creative Career Master Class. The event will be held at the Docklands Campus:
Creative Career Master Class No.1 - Models of Living
Creative graduates work in a myriad of ways.They may be employed, work freelance, be a sole trader, have a portfolio career or run their own business. What are the pros and cons of these different ways of working? A diverse chaired panel from the creative industries discuss and debate their own ways of working and the resulting implications their work has on the way they live.
The Master Class will be held on the 7th March 2012.
At 6pm a chaired panel will tell us about their own way of working and a brief outline of their career journey. A discussion will then take place, chaired by Mark Stephens CBE, followed by questions from the audience.
At 7.30 a networking event will be held in the Knowledge Dock Foyer, where "Creative Industry Experts" will be on hand - ready to be asked about their working life. Drinks and nibbles will be served.
This will be a fantastic event to inspire and investigate how you might function in the creative industries. The aim is to allow an insight into the varied ways of working, and to broaden student's preconceptions of what a creative career might be.

In November or April all new graduates will receivethe Destination of Leavers in Higher Education Survey (DLHE),asking youwhether you are in work or further study or doing something else since graduating. The survey takes a few minutes to complete and you can return your survey by post in the pre paid envelope which we will provide or we can call you to conduct the survey over the telephone.
On completion of the survey there is a chance to win one of two £250.00 gift vouchers of your choice! The information you give us helps us to calculate the employabilitystatistic for UEL graduates.This is a very useful indicator for our existing and potential students and you will be pleased to know that overall 78% of all UEL graduates find work or are in further study six months after leaving UEL (2008/9).

Job Opportunity – Stop Smoking Advisor
We are looking for outgoing, friendly people to join our team of stop smoking advisors, working around London to deliver good health messages and help people to stop smoking. The role is varied, with elements of outreach, data administration, call-backs and face-to-face interventions. You need to be a good communicator, happy to engage with people and have good administration skills. There are opportunities for training (Level 1 – 3 Smoking Cessation)
We are based in Clapham and work all over London, including Hackney, Southwark, Lewisham, Islington, Hillingdon and Greenwich.
Roles are part time and hours are flexible.
Hourly rates range from £7 to £10 depending on ability, and pay increases are given on merit.
