Leading human rights lawyer urges LGBT athletes to seek asylum during London 2012 Games
Human rights lawyer and high profile media commentator, Mark Stephens CBE, has called upon Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) athletes, who don’t feel safe in their respective countries, to apply for asylum during the London 2012 Games.
Mark Stephens, who is Chair of the Board of Governors at the University of East London (UEL), also lobbied the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ban the countries where homosexuality is criminalised from competing in the Olympic Games.
Speakingon Tuesday 22nd May at UEL as part of a series of public lectures, Mark Stephens’ lecture entitled Rainbow Legacy: why we must assert the rights of the international LGBT community during the Olympic Games, explored whether the Games can be used as a platform from which to launch multilateral legal challenges to address the criminalisation of homosexuality across the globe.
Speaking to an audience of academics, influential LGBT figureheads and local people, Mark Stephens appealed to LGBT athletes to follow the inspirational lead of American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who were both banned from the Games for merely making the Black Power salute in 1968 at the Mexico Olympic Games.
Stephens said: “I implore LGBT athletes who feel safe to do so, to come out and make a visible, memorable, courageous gesture for LGBT rights. Show that you are proud to be LGBT just as Smith and Carlos were both proud to be black.”
He continued: “I invite LGBT athletes who don’t feel safe to apply for asylum in this country on the grounds that you will face persecution at home if you are open about your sexual identity. The British Government will have to hear your application, and in doing so, they will have to engage with the human rights abuses perpetrated against the LGBT communities across the world."
Team USA Paralympic athlete visits UEL
One of Team USA’s leading medal hopes for this summer’s Paralympic Games paid a special visit to the University of East London this month
Lex Gillette, who is a totally blind track and field athlete, has achieved a world record, two Paralympic silver medals, eight American records and twelve national championships.
At the tender age of eight, Lex started experiencing problems with his eyesight, and was diagnosed with retinal detachment. Despite 10 separate operations, Lex never regained his sight.
Speaking to a special reception of staff and young people from schools in Newham, Lex offered an inspirational account of how he has overcome adversity to become a top paralympic athlete. Lex Won silver medals in the long jump at both the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens and 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. Last year, Lex broke a 19-year-old world record in the long jump for totally blind athletes at the Desert Challenge Games in Arizona.
Lex, who will be vying for a multiple haul of medals at the 2012 Paralympic Games, said: “This was an incredible opportunity to come out and speak to all of the students and staff. I am really looking forward to the London 2012 Games; there’s a passion in me to do well.”
UEL’s Docklands and Stratford Campuses will be Team USA’s main base for athlete training, performance services, staff and training partner accommodation, catering, media and logistical operations. Approximately 1,000 Team USA athletes and staff will use UEL’s new £21million state of the art SportsDock during the London 2012Olympic and Paralympic Games.
UEL Alum’s art sells for more than 200 times its original value
The work of one of UEL’s most accomplished graduates has fetched more than 200 times its original value on national television.
In 1986, Andrew Ruffhead, former Head of Textiles at UEL, bought sculpture Utopian Schemeby then recent UEL graduate, Jake Chapman, for a mere £50. Chapman was later to become infamous within the art community, as one half of the Chapman Brothers, for his irreverent commentary on the West’s increasing detachment towards war. The duo have since gone on to worldwide notoriety, selling pieces for millions to celebrities such as Charles Saatchi and Elton John.
Appearing on hit Channel 4 art dealer showFour Rooms, Andrew had hoped to see the graduation piece sell for £7,000. However, by capitalising on the keen interest of resident art dealer, Andrew Lamberty, Ruffhead was able to push the price up to £10,000.
The piece itself, composed of seven individual items, comprises snowglobe-like forms containing icons of Greek democracy. True to the Chapman Brothers form, the globes are topped by toy figurines of mutilated Nazi officers.
Dean of UEL’s School or Arts and Digital Industries, Catherine Harper, said: “This incredible revaluing of one of UEL’s most talented alumnus is an inspiration to all our student artists, especially given that this year's art and design graduates are about to install their own shows, at which their work will be for sale. It should also serve as an incentive for people to go out and invest in our strudents artwork, when it does become available to buy.”

2012 is here and we’re now in the final sprint towards the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
While the Games will bring a buzz of excitement and opportunity to east London, they will also bring major transport disruptions to the capital from the beginning of July until the Paralympic Games close on 9 September.
UEL is located in the heart of the Olympic area, close to two major Olympic and Paralympic venues at ExCeL and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, which will mean that both students and staff will experience disrupted journeys with severe delays expected. However, we intend to run as normal a service as possible. The exception will be during the Olympic Games from 27 July to 12 August, when all campus libraries will be closed.
The Alumni Office will be open to phone and email enquires, however you will however not be able to visit the alumni office between the 27th July and the 12th August. You will be able to email your Alumni Passport Card request to us during this period, however you will not be able to visit the campus to collect your card during these dates.
SportsDock will be closed to alumni on 9 July and will reopen on 16 August.
We are currently running an alumni survey to try and identify our main areas for improvement. Please help us out by taking a couple of minutes of your time to fill in the survey, which can be found here.

East is East: Alumni Reception - Thursday 19th April 2012, The Annex Gallery, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
It was with great pleasure that we welcomed around 60 enthusiastic Alumni through the doors of The Annexe Gallery, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on the evening of Thursday 19th April. The event which was attended by John Shaw, Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Catherine Downes, Director of Corporate Marketing and Adrienne Clarke, Director of the International Office at UEL, as well as staff members from many of our schools was very much a big hit!
This event offered a fantastic opportunity for Friends of UEL to come together, meet with old friends and make new ones. Guests were able to take a look at some of the fantastic work which students from the School of Arts and Digital Industries had produced: the exhibition titled East is East which
coincided
with the Alumni Reception, featured film projections, animations, sound works, architecture displays, hanging textile works, large scale photographs, light works using projected silhouettes, fashion 'sculptures' worn by live models, typographic vinyls, book works and live projected iPad drawings.
We were also very lucky to have a guest speaker Abdulkadir Shehu who was engaging, inspirational and thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance.
A big Thank you to the staff at the UEL Malaysia Centre and the School of Arts and Digital Industries for helping us put this event together.
Vision for the Metropolitan Police in the 21st Century- Tuesday 17th April 2012, Duncan House Campus, London
On Tuesday 17th April 2012, over 100 attendees gathered together for an event hosted jointly with the School of Law & Social Sciences on the future of policing in London. The event provoked much attention from students and alumni alike, with some choosing to make their voice heard outside the venue by hosting a protest against the Metropolitan Police. All this attention was due to the high-profile nature of our speaker, Bernard Hogan-Howe, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.
The evening started with an introduction by Fiona Fairweather, Dean of the School of Law & Social Sciences, who also chaired the event proceedings. Mr Hogan-Howe then gave an inspiring but pragmatic speech on his vision for the Metropolitan Police in the 21st Century. This was followed by a question and answer session, which provided an array of queries to which the Commissioner was able to answer with conviction.
The night closed in high spirits with a free buffet and light refreshments for all of our guests. Not without excitement – this event proved to be a memorable and informing experience. We hope to see you all at the next alumni presentation!
Alumni Reception, Cologne - Monday 26th March 2012, Regency Hyatt Hotel, Cologne, Germany
Over 60 German graduates joined us on Monday 26th March for a reunion in the Hyatt Regency hotel, Cologne, Germany. Many faces old and new were there to celebrate their successes and reminisce about their days spent studying together.
The evening was opened by a welcome speech from our very own Charlie Tyce, Acting Alumni Development Manager. Following this we heard from the Director for MBA Programmes, Dr Osman Khan, who filled us in on all the latest developments going on within the Business School and the university as a whole.
With a fantastic buffet and champagne reception the event was enjoyed by all in attendance, and we hope to have the chance to visit again in the future!
Stimulating Creativity via Multidisciplinary Learning - Wednesday 14th March 2012, Docklands Campus, London
Almost 100 UEL alumni, students and staff got together on Wednesday 14th March 2012 at the Docklands Campus to celebrate the first School of Architecture, Computing & Engineering Alumni Event titled “Stimulating Creativity via Multidisciplinary Learning”.
The evening started with welcomes from Hassan Abdalla, Dean of the School, followed by our very own Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick McGhee.
Sunand Prasad, Ex-President of the Royal Institute of British Architects and Honorary Doctorate in Arts headed the main presentation for the evening, with a large focus on promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the practice of engineering. Especially interesting was his take on the design of modern A&E hospital wards; a practical cross between clever design and thoughtful planning.
Following the talks, the guests convened in the foyer for some relaxed networking and refreshments. To finish, the attendants were broken into groups to discuss the recent developments and proposed futures in their respective fields.
If you missed out on any of these events, be sure to like us on facebook.com/uelalumni for updates on all upcoming events and UEL related news.

PsychologyDegree.net is an educational resource born from the college notes of Allison Gamble. Throughout her college career she wrote and collected hundreds of pages of notes that she wanted to put to good use. Why shouldn’t everyone have access to the same insight afforded to her? This question turned into a call to action and later, the PsychologyDegree.net website. The site is now an online repository of resources that span the range of psychological disciplines. Perusal of the site’s resources provides one with much of the same insight gained by college students today and offers. With this in mind, one should leave the site with a knowledge base akin to that of a ‘psychology degree. Take a look it might help you!
We are constantly looking at ways to help our students and graduates get on the career ladder and we have now managed to ensure that all RDBS graduates who wish to have access to the BizBuzz site can now do so free of charge!
