Get Engaged with UEL

Getting Down to Business Networking Event - Alumni speakers inspire students
Six of our successful and entrepreneurial alumni kindly volunteered to participate in our Business School Getting Down to Business Networking Event on 31 January 2011

They spoke to an audience of students about their rise to success and the challenges they faced during their careers and when setting up their own businesses. The event was designed to help students with their networking skills, so the alumni stayed for a networking session after the event.

Alumni publications
Martin Edwardes (2001 MA Independent Study) published his first academic book in September 2010 my book, “The Origins of Grammar: an anthropological perspective” was published by Continuum. The book looks at language as a model-making activity: we make mental models of reality (and unreality) and use them to plan, predict and learn. In particular, it looks at the peculiar human ability to make models of ourselves, an ability which is rare or nonexistent in the rest of nature. It shows that this capacity is a product of our sharing of models of others, and it is the likely source of many of the complexities of human language grammar. It is therefore a key feature of both human cognition and human socialisation. Please visit the Continuum website for further details

Obituaries
Dave Moore 1999 BSc Hons Health and Fitness. Dave died in August 2010 (aged 35). Tragically he took his own life, having suffered, for some years, from depression (admitted only to his closest family and hidden entirely from his many friends). In hindsight, his profound poetry, written in his last year, was the only outward indicator of his state of mind.

Dave led a very full life. His passions were  the mountains (skiing and snowboarding), the ocean (surfing), music (he had just completed the cataloguing of his first 50,000 music tracks), his friends and family.

While at school he was awarded an RAF Flying Scholarship and also became a proficient guitarist. He gained separate ‘PADI’ (scuba diving) qualifications in the Philippines and on The Great Barrier Reef.

Dave decided, at the age of 30, to get a ‘proper job’,  joined the Ambulance Service, based at Bridgwater, and found real fulfillment. At his funeral in Taunton (attended by over 300 people) the Air Ambulance performed a ‘fly by’ in tribute to a much-respected and loved colleague.

Dave’s passing was marked by a huge number of tributes clearly reflecting the great affection in which he was held. Sadly, he failed to recognise his own worth.

Directory of Voluntary Careers Speakers (DVCS) - British Psychological Society

Calling all 2008-2010 graduates in Psychology; BSc, PGDip & MSc conversion courses, who are graduate members of the BPS and/or who meet the criteria for Graduate Basis for Chartership with the BPS, provided they register their eligibility by joining the BPS (New membership costs £57 for the first five years post-grad) They do not have to be working within the field of Psychology, but there are additional benefits involved through membership.

It is also open to students/trainees who are currently enrolled on a PG course in any of the fields which will afford one of the protected titles of Chartered Psychologist, as agreed by the Health Professions Council (HPC). This cohort will automatically receive a discount in membership fees.

This is especially open to ALL Chartered Psychologists, whether HPC registered or not.

The Society is currently updating its Directory of Voluntary Careers Speakers (DVCS) and is looking for Chartered and Graduate members that would like to be included on the list.

The DVCS aims to put teachers, lecturers and career advisors in touch with members of the Society that are willing to visit schools and other institutions to talk about their experience of the discipline. It is hoped that by providing access to our members and their experiences, students will be able to gain a greater insight into working in the field of psychology.

Voluntary Career Speakers will have access to Society career publications and a careers PowerPoint presentation, as well as online resources to keep up to date with the latest information on psychology careers. We do intend to improve the support we provide for members listed on the Directory and are currently in the process of reviewing our careers information. If you have any suggestions for publications, posters etc that you think would be helpful we would appreciate your input. Please use any of the contact details listed below.

The DVCS is currently produced in a printed format; however, we do intend to publish it as a searchable list on the Society’s website. This will mean that any information detailed on the Directory will be available to the public. When this becomes available, members will also be able to update their DVCS profile through the member’s area of the website.

If you would like to become a Voluntary Career Speaker then please download an application form from our website at:

www.bps.org.uk/careers/resources

Becoming a Voluntary Career Speaker is a great way of sharing your knowledge and personal experience with the next generation of Psychologists. It’s also a great addition to your CV. We would welcome contributions from all of our Chartered and Graduate members, including those who may not work in a psychological setting but find their psychology background useful in their current career.
