The University of East London (UEL) has launched a bold new campaign warning its students about the hidden perils of unscrupulous payday loan companies.
Given there are 2,000 students at UEL with dependent children – a group commonly targeted by payday loan companies- the University has taken the landmark decision to ban all payday loan advertising and promotional materials at its campuses – a move that could be heralded as a first by any UK university.
As part of the campaign, UEL has teamed up with the National Union of Students (NUS) and Movement for Change – an organisation that lobbies for a cap on the amount of interest payday lenders can charge.
In a recent report, the NUS unearthed widespread evidence concerning the use of short term loans by students in the UK. In addition, the report also found certain groups were more susceptible to the lure of payday loans, with one in ten student parents having taken out a cash advance from a high street lender at some point during their studies.
Nicole Redman, Head of Student Money Advice & Rights Team (SMART), said: “Our advice to students is to try and avoid the temptation of a payday loan at all costs. While it might seem like an ideal solution in the short term, the long term repercussions can be very serious, with students finding themselves in a vicious circle of insurmountable debt. If a student is experiencing any financial difficulties, we would strongly encourage them to get in touch with the SMART team. We will always do our utmost to try and advise students about what the safe and practical alternatives are.”
Speaking at the campaign launch, Peter Mercer, NUS Vice President said: “Payday lenders try to present themselves as some kind of alternative to government-backed student loans but in reality short-term borrowing often makes students’ financial situation worse rather than better. Unscrupulous lenders targeting vulnerable students and other low earners need to be controlled and I am really pleased UEL has launched this campaign, which will help protect its students against the plethora of payday lenders we now see operating within our local communities, high streets and on the internet.Students waiting for their next loan payment and scraping around for money to pay bills might be tempted by adverts that present a supposedly painless and easy solution. Down the line when interest racks up, it can be difficult to pay back and many borrowers end up in a cycle of snowballing loans taken out to pay off previous debts.”
UEL’s elite rowing scholars won gold at last months British Universities Colleges Sport (BUCS) 4s & 8s Head, following a dominant display on the River Witham, Boston.
UEL’s boat, which consisted of Peter Hardcastle, Alan Sinclair, Martins Etem and Tom Wilkinson, completed the 5,000 meter course in an impressive time of 16:48.9min, some 31 seconds ahead of their opponents to claim victory.
Tom Wilkinson said: “We knew Loughborough and Durham were going to be our main competition. They went out hard and we could see them gaining on us during the first half of the race. We paced ourselves really well, stayed strong and pulled away during the second half. The last kilometre was really tough, but in the end we beat them by 31 seconds. The race went to plan; we gave them a real beating.”
18 crews competed in the final of the time trial in Lincolnshire, with UEL beating Loughborough into second and Cardiff into third.
Fabpad, UEL’s digital fabric and paper print bureau, added another high profile brand to its list of clients last month.
The team behind the new Cheryl Cole advert for L’Oreal enlisted Fabpad to provide the printed fabric and backdrop for their new Colour Match foundation campaign.
Celebrity photographer, Rankin, shot the Girls Aloud and former X-Factor star in a dress that was colour-matched expertly by the Fabpad team, so that Cole blended into the background. His images have been featured in Look, OK and the Daily Mail in advance of the new L’Oreal advert hitting TV screens this month.
Fabpad provides a fast digital print service to clients across the textile and fashion industry, including ASOS, Reiss, Debenhams, and Agi & Sam. Based in the Knowledge Dock Business Centre at UEL’s Docklands Campus, Fabpad also provides an affordable printing service to UEL students, linking closely to the university’s Fashion and textile programmes.
The leading entrepreneur Lord Gulam Noon was appointed as the new Chancellor of the University of East London (UEL) in a ceremony at the House of Lords in January of this year.
Lord Noon developed his business from a sweet shop in Mumbai to a multimillion pound food empire employing thousands of people in the UK. He replaces Lord Brian Rix, the actor and charity campaigner, as the figurehead of London’s leading modern research university. Lord Rix was UEL’s first Chancellor and is stepping down as the longest-serving university Chancellor in England.
Lord Noon said: “I am both proud and excited to be taking on this role at UEL. This is a great institution, with a strong record of providing opportunities for all to improve and develop. I am looking forward to helping them continue their good work, encouraging diversity and developing entrepreneurship alongside academic excellence.”
Lord Noon – who is credited with introducing the British palate to Indian food on a large scale through his business supplying supermarkets including Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Waitrose – has a long-standing relationship with UEL. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the university in 2009, in recognition of his achievements as an entrepreneur, and has helped the university create and run a centre for diversity in business.
Mark Stephens CBE, chair of UEL’s Board of Governors, said “We’re delighted Lord Noon has agreed to be our new Chancellor. He brings exceptional ability and achievement, and his successful career will be an inspiration to our students. Lord Noon is also renowned for his love of cricket and he recognises our ambition to be the leading university for sport in London”.
His appointment was welcomed by two other honorary graduates of UEL. The former Attorney-General Baroness Patricia Scotland said: “UEL couldn’t have picked a better person to be their new chancellor. Lord Noon is a brilliant entrepreneur who shares UEL’s values and cares deeply about education. He will be a great success, an exemplar for young people to follow.”
Political philosopher and academic Professor Lord Bhikhu Parekh said: “Lord Noon is a remarkable man who has risen from humble origins to become one of the most respected and admired individuals in Britain and India. His courage, determination, and integrity and moral transparency are clearly evident and he will, I have no doubt, contribute immensely to the university.”
The Chancellor is the formal head of UEL, and acts as an ambassador for the university, its staff and students. As well as playing a key role in graduation ceremonies, Lord Noon will help to raise the profile of UEL and ensure that the talent and ability of our students and graduates are recognised.
Lord Noon is also a fellow of Birkbeck, University of London, with whom UEL are currently developing a new and exciting shared campus in Stratford, opening in September 2013.
Professor Patrick McGhee tendered his resignation from the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University of East London earlier this year on health grounds. Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Joughin, has now become Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university. Professor McGhee’s statement to staff and students is copied below for information.
“Dear Colleagues
Having given the matter considerable thought, I have reluctantly decided to tender my resignation from UEL on health grounds.
Hopefully, these challenges are temporary and I will be able to return to making a full contribution to higher education leadership in the UK in the not-too-distant future. As I'm sure colleagues will understand, I have asked for my privacy and that of those close to me to be respected at this time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank colleagues and students for making my time at UEL so enjoyable.
Professor Patrick McGhee”

The Sustainability Team, part of Facilities Services, working in partnership with the Cass School of Education and Communities, will take on a Research Intern as part of UEL's undergraduate Research Internship programme. The project involves the development of an understanding of the range of sustainability-related education taking place in UEL and other Higher Education Institutes.
The study will use a mixed methods approach including semi-structured interviews, documentary analysis and an online survey using Survey Monkey to gather data. This partnership is unique within UEL as Facilities Services is the only service participating in the scheme. Preparation work has already begun so the successful intern will have a flying start. In addition the intern will receive regular research mentoring from a member of the research team. The research will contribute towards developing sustainable teaching and learning strategy at the institution to help UEL continue to be a top performer in the People and Planet Green League.
The Production of Place conference and workshops was held at the University of East London Docklands campus from the 15th to the 18th December 2012, keynote speakers included Tony Fretton, the author Iain Sinclair, Alberto Molletto and the Vice-President of research at the US Green Building Council, Chris Pyke. Delegates from from all 5 continents of the world presented 38 papers, selected from 120 submissions. The papers reflected on the three themes of the conference from their different contexts. 16 discussion forums debated the ideas to reveal a strong consensus amongst the speakers that the topic of the conference was unique, relevant to their work and provided an international platform for academic development. There was participation from both students and staff, with several ACE staff presenting papers. The quality of the papers was outstanding, with many papers being graded 1 or 2 on a rating of 1-5 (1 best) by the reviewing panel.
In parallel, some 30 students took part in construction workshops with visiting artists including Turner-prize nominee Richard Wilson, with the work being exhibited in the conference break-out spaces. The discussions continued in the breaks and there was thoroughly positive feedback on the conference and a genuine interest in seeing it continued, with several institutions expressing interest in partnering with UEL to help strengthen the platform.
Professor Hassan Abdalla, Dean of ACE commented the production of place conference, "It was definitely a great success and the international speakers delivered impressive presentations which inspired all delegates. This is the first of a series of conferences in architecture organised by UEL self esteemed staff”

This recently launched ‘Ngage’ programme is designed to support the schools objective of transforming the lives of our students and enhancing their experiences at University.
The two key areas that the programme looks to develop are around guest speakers both motivational (Role models) and subject specific as well as creating a pool of Alumni mentors where our students have the opportunity to discuss their opportunities and challenges on a one to one basis.
Alumni guest speakers provide students with firsthand knowledge about getting acclimated to the school, how to prepare for their careers and how to manage their time and competing obligations once they've entered the workforce.
Working with a group of student mentees, the alumni will be on hand to help and advise students on a range of issues including academic performance and career progression.
If you are interested in getting involved with the ‘Ngage’ programme and giving something back to the school, please contact Mark Watson via rdbs-alumni@uel.ac.uk.

Rufena Haque, Human Resources Management, 2012
PA to Clerk and Chief Executive at the Sir John Cass's Foundation
I remember being on the tube and I saw a UEL poster with a picture of the Docklands campus and Canary Wharf in the night, the text read something along the lines of "it makes sense to study business in the heart of business". I researched UEL and found it had a great reputation for HR, so I decided to visit the campus on an Open Day. When I went to visit the campus, the location and view drew me in.
I knew immediately that UEL was the University I wanted to attend. At the beginning of my 2nd year I contacted the employability team at UEL to assist me in completing an admin/office internship. It was Mark Watson who forwarded me the vacancy at Sir John Cass’s Foundation. Although at the time the position was only for a month, I still applied to gain work experience. I was than short listed along with 13 other candidates from other Universities within London, interviewed and offered the position.
I later found out that it was my positive attitude and adaptability that gave me the edge over my rivals. When the PA vacancy arose, I put myself forward for the position. By this time my internship had been extended and I had been with the Foundation for 17 months. During this time I gained fundamental experience and used this time to fully understand the Foundation and its activities and had worked within different areas of the Foundation increasing my knowledge and responsibilities.
My HR degree came in use when I was given the responsibility for the entire recruitment process for new Governors. I believe in five years time I will have settled into a HR role as a result of my experience at Sir John Cass’s Foundation. I intend to have completed my Masters and be CIPD qualified in order to put myself in a better position to reach my long term goal of starting my own HR consultancy business.
If I could offer one piece of advice to other UEL students and graduates it would be, “Take advantage of all the opportunities available to you and explore any positions that may not immediately fit your long term plans as you never know where it may lead. That way you’ll always have open options rather than limiting yourself. I have learnt that so many roles and careers in differing professions all intertwine and come together with many of the skills required being directly transferable between professions.”
Do you have a story to share? We are looking for Alumni to feature in our next Alumni Magazine, if you have something you would like to feature in ‘Now and Then’ get in contact. We are also offering advertising space in this edition of ‘Now and Then’ with a 10% discount on the rates to our Alumni Network Members. An advert in ‘Now and Then’ magazine will reach over 40,000 named graduates from The University of East London and provide an opportunity to talk directly to this high calibre audience, of which over 65% live in London and the South East. In addition University staff, business colleagues, friends and supporters also receive ‘Now and Then’. If you would like more information on our advertising rates get in contact.

On Wednesday 5th December 2012, around 30 attendees gathered together for UEL’s Alumni 2012 Occupational, Organisational & Business Psychology Reunion event. He also previously worked at Birkbeck College, University of London for 19 years after completing his PhD at the MRC/ESRC Social and Applied Psychology Unit (now the institute of Work Psychology).
The evening started with an introduction by Rachel Mulvey, Associate Dean of the School of Psychology at UEL. This was followed by Professor Rob Briner giving an inspiring but pragmatic talk from his vast experience on Organisational Psychology.

Over the summer hundreds of UEL students volunteered at the London 2012 Olympics. In early December the efforts of all our volunteers were recognised at a unique celebration event which took place at the London Legacy Development Corporation’s offices in Stratford. Vice Chancellor Patrick McGhee spoke at the event praising the volunteers for their hard work and dedication recognising the importance of such activity in enhancing students’ employability.
During the Autumn term EET delivered a lunchtime programme of workshops open to all students across all schools focussing on the key areas around employability such as planning a career, making effective applications and interviewing well. These workshops were delivered by both employers and EET staff. Over 150 students attended the series. EET intends to run a second series of workshops during the Spring term. Recent graduates (2 years out) are welcome to register. Check out our events pages at: www.uel.ac.uk/eet
We want to support your business! In the UK the level of entrepreneurial activity among women is 44% of that found among men. At the University’s Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship (CEWE) – we strive to unlock this potential and guide women on the path to entrepreneurial success.
We currently have two projects running and we would like to get you involved.
Make it Real Did you know… If the UK could achieve the same levels of female entrepreneurship as the US, Britain would gain three quarters of a million more businesses. More women need to step into enterprise and we are committed to making that happen. We were recently awarded with a £50,000 ‘Inspiring Women’ grant from the Royal Bank of Scotland to develop the project ‘Make it Real’. If you have an idea and you want to make it real, applications for our support package open in March. Get in touch today at cewe@uel.ac.uk with the subject title ‘Make it Real’
Make it Global Did you know… Women account for only a third of the EU's entrepreneurs and only 16% of women-led businesses export compared to 30% of SMEs as a whole. This need to be addressed and women-led businesses need to be encouraged and inspired to export more. UEL has developed ‘Make It Global’, a £1.5 million European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded project offering a programme of free business support to boost the internationalisation of women-led small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in London. If you have ambitions yourself to take your business overseas please get in touch with makeitglobal@uel.ac.uk to access our free support package! We are also looking for alumni who have successfully internationalised their businesses to pass on their knowledge and expertise.
