New Dean of Psychology Appointed
Professor Mark Davies has just taken up the post of Dean of the School of Psychology, having joined us from Nottingham Trent University.

Appointment of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International)
The University has recently made two important appointments at the senior management level. Professor John Joughin has been appointed to the post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, while John Shaw will work to further develop the University’s international presence as Pro Vice-Chancellor (International).

Professor Recognised for Gender Pay Gap Research
In July of this year the Dean of UEL’s Royal Docks Business School, Professor Len Shackleton, was awarded the Institute of Economic Affairs’ Arthur Seldon Award for Excellence in recognition of his work on the gender pay gap.

Business School Student Selected for Pearson Education Student Advisory Board
Aliya Nuur has been named to the Student Advisory Board of Pearson Education, which is one of the world's leading publishers.

Student to Represent England at Commonwealth Games
Jeffrey Lawal-Balogun has been selected to compete for England in the 200m at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, following his strong performance at the recent European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.

Enterprising Graduates Receive Start-Up Grants from the Haberdashers’ Company
Eight enterprising former students of UEL were recently awarded business start-up grants from the Haberdashers’ Company’s New Entrepreneurs Start-Up Fund.

A self portrait by former student Benjamin Ogbebor has been short listed for the prestigious BP Portrait Award, and is currently on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Fashion Student’s Work Wins International Acclaim
UEL Fashion student Bunmi Olaye has been named ‘Best Emerging International Designer’ at Africa Fashion Week. She was then invited to meet Nelson Mandela, and has also received interest in her designs from America's First Lady. Bunmi’s latest work will be on show at this September’s London Fashion Week.

The First Annual Fund Awards Ceremony
The Annual Fund was launched eighteen months ago to generate support for four important University projects: Student Hardship Grants; Start-Up Research Grants; a new library at our Stratford campus; and the new Sports and Academic Complex at our Docklands campus. Thanks to the support of our alumni and other Friends of UEL, the first Annual Fund Student Hardship and Start-Up Research Grants will be awarded at a ceremony to be held on Wednesday 29 September and hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick McGhee, and honorary graduate Baroness Prosser, OBE. Donors and supporters are invited to this event to celebrate this success and meet the beneficiaries of their support.

Staff from throughout the University pushed their bodies to the limit at August’s London Triathlon, held at the ExCeL exhibition centre, in order to promote UEL and raise money for our Annual Fund.

10% Postgraduate Fee Discount for Recent Alumni
From September 2010 UEL is offering a discount to all alumni who enrol on a full-time postgraduate programme (or part-time postgraduate research programme) within three years of successful completion of their undergraduate degree or PGCE. The 10% discount will be deducted from your tuition fees after any Merit scholarships and before any early payment discount is applied. It can also be used in conjunction with other scholarships and funding. You don’t need to do anything to apply - just make it clear on your application form that you have previously studied at UEL and include your student ID number. We’ll do the rest!

Paid Job Placements Available Through Graduate Talent Pool
Recent graduates who are looking for work may be interested in the Graduate Talent Pool, which is a project based work placement scheme that pays participants £210 per week (tax free). Available placements include marketing, web development, research, business planning and anything else that a company may need help with. Companies involved with the scheme include manufacturers, recruitment consultancies, graphic designers and charities. It is also possible that these placements will lead to permanent positions.

Does Your Business Need A Student/Graduate to Complete a Project?
If you have a project that would benefit from a skilled student/graduate then UEL’s Employability & Enterprise Team may be able to help you by arranging a part-funded student/graduate placement. The aim of such placements is to support your company’s development by providing a student or graduate with the skills you need to complete a project that you do not have the resources to complete yourself. You define the project, receive CV's and decide who to interview and offer the placement to. The Employability & Enterprise Team provides advice and support throughout, and placements are part-funded by the Government and other agencies. Volunteer with City Year
City Year brings together young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time volunteering, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. Working in primary schools as mentors, tutors and role models, the organisation's young leaders make a difference by delivering in-school and after-school programmes and community projects. The organisation is seeking eight young people to join them for a six month period starting in the New Year. Applications are being accepted until Friday 22 October. 2010 Destination of Leavers in Higher Education Survey
In November of this year 2010 graduates will receive a request to participate in the Destination of Leavers in Higher Education (DLHE) Surveyasking you whether you are in work or further study, and we will also telephone you. The information you provide will help us to calculate the employability statistics for UEL graduates.This is a very useful indicator for our existing and potential students, and you will be pleased to learn that we are currently above the national average.
UEL launches Part-Time Evening Courses at Canary Wharf
UEL’s School of Humanities & Social Sciences is now running courses in London’s Canary Wharf district – ideal for those who work in and around the area and wish to undertake flexible evening study. Courses currently on offer include: Creative & Professional Writing; Writing – Imaginative Practice; Social Sciences (Olympic & Paralympic Games); and Magazines. Keep your company Competitive: Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses
This new three week course provides an introduction to social media marketing, and focuses on: blogging (Google Reader and Wordpress); social networking (Facebook); and micro-updating (Twitter). The course is delivered online and is free. Support will be provided through group discussions and scheduled chat sessions. Topics covered include: the rise and importance of social media; social media marketing - building community with your customers, promoting your business, encouraging conversations; what social media tools your competitors are using and how; the importance of blogging; using Facebook business applications; and establishing a social media strategy. Courses run in May, July and September, with further deliveries planned for later in the year.
