Alumni Enewsletter Apr '09

Welcome to the latest edition of UEL Alumni Network News

Emma Cale

Welcome to the second alumni enewsletter of 2009. This edition comprises of four sections:

UEL Latest News, UEL Alumni Network including forthcoming alumni events in the UK and overseas, Engaging with UEL, and Career Development and Entrepreneurship.

The last quarter of 2008 was extremely busy for the Alumni Network with a wide variety of events, as you will have noticed in the last enewsletter. We started this year by planning our next batch of alumni events. So, as you will see in this enewsletter we’ve got lots of events coming up covering a wide range of subject areas – we hope there will be something of interest for you and we look forward to welcoming you back on campus if you are able to join us.

You will also read that we successfully conducted our first telephone fundraising campaign in February. The campaign raised in donations and pledges over £90,000 from our alumni network for the development plans of UEL. We are so proud of our alumni, who have proved to be a passionate and enthusiastic source of support for UEL

We’re currently expanding our programme of alumni volunteering. Our Employability Team is interested to recruit alumni who can assist in giving some form of careers advice to our current students. If you scroll down to the ‘volunteering and involvement opportunities’ you will see the ways you can get involved. Our students benefit hugely from the experiences of our alumni, so if there is any way you would like to help, then we hope we can use your talents!

Also, we’ve expanding our alumni case studies – so if you’ve got a story to tell and want to share it – then please contact us. Details of how to do this are in this enewsletter

Our membership of various social and professional networking sites is expanding all the time. I’ve listed the websites where the Alumni Network has a membership group, in this enewsletter so please join and keep in touch with us and your fellow graduates.

Finally – we’re sending out the next issue of Now and Then, so to ensure you get your copy delivered to you – let us have your correct postal address. If you’ve moved, or never received a magazine – please update your details on the alumni website – or email us directly at alumni@uel.ac.uk

I hope you will enjoy reading it. As always we look forward to receiving your stories, comments and suggestions.

1) UEL Latest News

1.1) Launch of the Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship

We are delighted to inform you that a fantastic new facility for students, graduates and local entrepreneurs has been launched on our Docklands campus. Supported by East-End entrepreneur, philanthropist and UEL honorary graduate, Jack Petchey, an innovative business partnership between the Jack Petchey Foundation and UEL is now open. The Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship was launched on 25th March by Jack Petchey, alongside our Acting Vice-Chancellor: Professor Susan Price, and UEL’s honorary graduate and Chair of London Development Agency: Harvey McGrath.

The unique centre, which combines enterprise development, teaching, research, mentoring and community outreach, is based at our Business School and Knowledge Dock, which was recently named as the only EU-accredited Business Innovation Centre (BIC) in London.  Focusing on fostering young people's entrepreneurship, it has been set up with the support of a £500,000 donation from the Jack Petchey Foundation to UEL. The Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship will be a hub of research into entrepreneurship and the wider economy, especially the regeneration of London and the Thames Gateway

L-R Jack Petchy, Susan Price, Harvey McGrath

Jack Petchey, who started out in business with a taxi service at the Royal Docks, said: “I am proud to support this fantastic new facility, which will give young people in East London access to all of the resources they need to succeed with their new enterprises.

Becoming an entrepreneur is an ambition in the heart and if young people already have the desire, we can help them transfer that into a managed, structured system here. The Foundation encourages young people to achieve great things, and I fully expect those who are using this Centre to have a positive effect on our community and our economy in the future.”

Jack Petchey and the Jack Petchey Foundation

Jack Petchey is one of the UK's most successful businessmen. Born in East London in July 1925, Jack came from a working class background with very few advantages. From an early age he showed the entrepreneurial skills that have aided his success. In 1999, Jack Petchey set up the Foundation, because he wanted to give opportunities to young people in London. Over the last nine years he has donated over £50million to schools, clubs and projects which benefit young people in London.  In 2003 UEL awarded Jack with an honorary doctorate and in 2004 Jack was awarded an OBE.

1.2) UEL wins education award

Here at UEL we are leading the way in pioneering new education partnerships with schools and colleges. In March, students of our Cass School of Education and Communities celebrated winning the London Education Partnership Award at London's City Hall.

The students from our innovative Foundation Degree for Teaching Assistants, were recognised for building lasting education partnerships with UEL, schools in Barking and Dagenham and the Barking Learning Centre.

Headteachers

“I am delighted that UEL has won this award and many congratulations to all the students,” said Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Susan Price. “We believe that we can achieve a lot more in partnership and we are committed to our work in Barking and Dagenham.”

The event was organised by the Greater London Authority and Jeff Jacobs, Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director of Communities and Intelligence and Wes Streeting, National President of the National Union of Students and the Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, Councillor Emmanuel Obasohan were among speakers and guests.

Mayor Obasohan said: “Joint partnership working is great because one organisation or authority alone can’t do it alone. We need to diversify and understand each other.”

Another successful networking opportunity in forging further partnerships with schools and building on existing ones was the Headteachers dinner held on 11 March. Forty head teachers from schools around London including the boroughs of Westminster, Islington, Ealing, Newham, Enfield, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge, Thurrock, Essex, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets enjoyed the chance to network and find further opportunities of working together.

1.3) 160 Years of East End Theatre History now available online

The East London Theatre Archive (ELTA) will be free to access online for the first time today as part of a project spearheaded by UEL and funded by JISC, a joint committee of the UK further and higher education funding councils.

(From L to R, Roland Muldoon, co-founder of CAST, Senior lecturer in Performing Arts at UEL, Mark Hunter, Acting Vice-Chancellor of UEL, Professor Susan Price, Director of the Institute for Performing Arts Development at UEL Mark O'Thomas, Catherine Haill from the V & A Theatre Collections and Claire Hudson, also from the V & A Theatre Collections)

The Archive showcases genres that flourished in the East End including music hall, burlesque and alternative comedy, with materials dating back as far as 1827.

UEL together with our project partners have been carefully collating the materials for the ELTA project to ensure it reflects the history of East End theatre. The online database is free to access and will allow students, historians and theatre fans alike to delve into the rich history of the East End’s theatre scene.

The archive includes posters from events staged by political theatre company Cartoon Archetypical Slogan Theatre (CAST) at the Hackney Empire, documenting early gigs from the likes of Paul Merton, Julian Clary, Jo Brand and Steve Coogan. 19th century play texts, newspaper cuttings and play scripts are also featured.

Andrew McDonald, Director of Library and Learning Services at UEL and Project Director at ELTA said: “Despite often being in the shadow of its West End counterpart, East End theatre has made many influential contributions to the world of performing arts which are documented through the archive’s content. We have been able to preserve a valuable slice of cultural history so it can live on for years to come.”

1.4) UEL and London 2012

Following from the UEL Team Beijing trip to the Beijing Games last year, we have been continuing with our work alongside and in partnership with the 2012 Games. One major activity that resulted from the visit last year has been the promotion of UEL facilities for training camps and hosting during the Games. The School of Health and Bioscience has worked with colleagues in other areas of UEL to host a series of visits around potential hosting during and around the 2012 Games; including those from major international teams, various professional Olympic bodies and related organisations. We cannot reveal these names yet, however, if we are successful, the potential benefits to UEL include developing partnerships and relationships with a wide range of professional bodies and organisations during the Games.

Stadium

The Games give an opportunity to raise the profile of Sport across UEL and develop better facilities for students, staff and alumni. To this aim, we are involved in the task of bringing about the development of student sports across the university and the construction of new sports facilities at Docklands. The new facilities are expected to include Badminton, Basketball, Netball, and Volleyball, Handball and 5-a-side football facilities internally and 5-a-side football, 6-a-side hockey, Tennis and Netball outside facilities. It is expected to be available in 2011, ready for the 2012 Games. In the mean time, we are working in partnership with Newham Borough Council to share and improve local sports facilities for our students, both for leisure and educational use. We have recently appointed a new Director of Sport to take such developments forward.

An important concern around the 2012 games is, of course the legacy aspects. This doesn't just include the wonderful sport buildings and facilities that we hope our students, staff and alumni will have access to post 2012, but the longer lasting social and health legacy. Staff in the School of Health and Bioscience chair the Newham Community Sport and Physical Activity Network (CSPAN), which brings together all the agencies involved and interested in increasing sport and physical activity participation in the Borough. The School also hosts Proactive East that is also has significant interests in community sports.

1.5) Research News

Rix Centre Research update: Multimedia Advocacy tackles social exclusion of older people

Age Concern project

A recent study aimed to explore and collect the views of older people who have had experience of mental capacity, on the nature and extent of their exclusion and what, in their opinion, needs to change in order to achieve greater social inclusion. It focused on capturing the views of older people living with dementia, people who had experienced a stroke, people living with learning disabilities and head injuries. The study involved a series of multimedia advocacy interviews conducted between April and May 2008 with a diverse selection of older people who have experienced a loss of mental capacity. Interviewees talked about various areas of their lives and how they have changed over the years. The findings highlighted in this report introduce interviewees’ views about their lives and experiences of social exclusion. The areas of exclusion and ways in which they can be challenged are also highlighted.

The multimedia advocacy approach is built around the way in which photos and other media have been popularly used to help us to share our lives and experiences with each other, for example with family photo albums, snapshots of holidays and more recently by flicking through our mobile phone image and video clip libraries. Multimedia advocacy can avail itself of tools and techniques to suit the individual, deploying digital photography and video, as well as microphones and computers with assistive devices such as switches or alternative keyboards as tools to help capture people’s communication, their likes and dislikes, preferences and choices. The multimedia advocacy process offers a platform for staff and service users or researcher and participant ‘subjects’ to work together, learn from each other, document the detail of day to day lives, celebrate achievements, communicate aspirations and share experiences and points of view

2.2) Alumni Network News

Volunteering and involvement opportunities

Can you help our current students with their careers and employability?

Option 1) Becoming an assessor - The Employability Team at UEL recently organised four Mock-Assessment Centres to give current UEL students experience of the kinds of intensive interview, presentations, psychometric tests and group exercises they might encounter when applying for graduate level jobs. With over 40 students and 50 assessors from companies such as Credit Suisse, BT,Newham Council and UEL, the sessions were a resounding success and showed a clear benefit for both students and assessors.

Audience

If you or your colleagues are interested in sharing your business knowledge and experience with current UEL students by becoming an assessor at future events, please contact Laura Barkaway at l.barkaway@uel.ac.uk

Option 2) Offering Job Placements in summer 2009 - Over the last 3 years the Employability Team has grown its own supported paid Summer Placement Scheme. In its infancy the scheme managed to find 13 paid opportunities for our students over the summer from June to September. Last year Mark Faulkner from the Employability Team, managed to secure 37 paid opportunities for our students and is hopeful to increase the numbers for 2009.

If you or your company can accommodate a paid placement to offer current UEL undergraduate the opportunity to practice learned skills in the workplace and adding value to their academic achievements, please contact m.faulkner@uel.ac.uk for further details of the scheme.

Option 3) Getting Down to Business Week: Taking part in our assessment centres- The Employability team at UEL takes a broader view than most universities in preparing UEL students for careers. We aim to develop students' skills by offering interactive sessions rather than the traditional talk from the industry representative! Getting Down to Business Week, held during the week of 26 January 2009,offered a programme designed to raise the awareness of differing opportunities available in the finance sector, as well as offering tailor made assessment centres. Speakers from State Street Bank, Deutsche Bank and Anglo Irish Bank worked with our students from the Business School on a day's programme and provided them with valuable insights to prepare them for their future careers. Other workshops were led the Windsor Fellowship, Gradintel and the Shell Step Programme.

We will have more Business Weeks planned. In these difficult times we are aiming to offer as many preparation sessions as resources will permit.

If you would like to participate in our assessment process by offering to help with mock interviews, or if your company is in the position of having vacancies that need to be filled, we would really welcome your contribution. Please contact: m.richardson@uel.ac.uk if you are able to assist us in any way.

2.4) Alumni Network Profiles

David Pairpoint
2008 MA Fine Art Studio Practice
Current Occupation: Artist

UEL student and graduate David Pairpoint worked for 20 years in a bank until he decided to shed the collar and tie and become a mature art student. Now studying for a Phd, he recently had a powerful exhibition at the New Cut Arts Centre called 'Hooray for Hollywood' which looks at the way Hollywood glamorises the most tragic of professions.

David Pairpoint, 64, of Flixton, near Bungay, is currently studying for his doctorate in fine art at UEL having first gained a degree and then a masters degree here.

“I worked at Lloyds Bank for 20 years before chucking the job in and went off to Norwich Art School to do a foundation course, which I then followed up with a BA in fine art at the University of East London and then went back 15 years later to do my masters degree and now I am currently working on my Phd - on a part-time basis.”

David Pairpoint

For me it came when my daughter came home from university and told me that she had come across these things called mature students - people of my age who had gone to university later in life. I had never come across this before but I quickly found out about it."

He said that although he didn't have his life changing epiphany until the age of 40, he has never regretted the change of career from reasonably well-paid bank employee to new artist.

“It took a lot of courage at the time - not only on my part but on the part of my family as well.” David's talent and hard-work are being recognised with the exhibition at the New Cut Arts Centre in Halesworth.

David's exhibition takes as its theme the way that iconic Hollywood images are used as part of our visual language in everyday life and makes a link between the way that Julia Roberts prostitute was portrayed in Pretty Woman and the way that the five murdered prostitutes were portrayed by the media while the search was on for their killer.

“In later life I have come to realise how much of my outlook on the world has been shaped by Hollywood and how the film industry portrays the world. It shapes our thinking without us really being aware of it.”

He said that film world has always glamorised the world of the prostitute and perhaps now needs to take stock and take responsibility for the messages it sends out.

3) Engaging with UEL Together

First telethon campaign raises over £90,000 in donations and pledges for the Annual Fund!

Our first telethon fundraising campaign has been a huge success and has raised over £90,000 in donations and pledges from our alumni which will be invested in new development initiatives at both of our campuses.

Our first fundraising event ran for a whole month and it supports the Annual Fund, which was launched in November 2008. The Fund offers an opportunity for UEL alumni, staff, students, Governors and other friends of the University to help fulfil development plans for the university in the run up to 2012.

The money raised from the Annual Fund will go towards the following projects:

Cashael

Dr Fariba Salehi-Kellaway, our Head of Development and Alumni at UEL said: “This has been a great first fundraising campaign and I’m delighted with the outcome. In addition, the funding will raise potentially over £135,000 after the Government’s fifty per cent matched-funding is added. We recruited and trained a fantastic group of forty five student callers who agreed to call members of the Alumni Network to ask them if they would like to donate towards the Annual Fund.

“The callers loved their experience and approached thousands of our alumni to raise the funds. Our alumni have proved to be a generous source of support for the university as we expected. Now the students can't wait to get involved in the next campaign and bring other students along too. Charlotte Tyce, our Annual Fund Officer, also worked with a lot of commitment towards the success of this campaign. Thanks to them all!”

Austin Nnajieze, who is studying International Law and Economy said:“Being able to take part in UEL’s first Telephone Fundraising Campaign and succeeding in raising funds for the Annual Fund is my way to leave a legacy behind.”

Cashael Mason Nwokeji is in her second year studying International Development Studies. She said: “It was a brilliant campaign and I really enjoyed fundraising for the university. It is fantastic that UEL is trying to meet the needs of students by enriching their student experience on our campuses”.

Thank you...

to all our donors who contributed to the Annual Fund during the telethon. We have had over 500 donors! There are too many to individually thank in this enewsletter, but please know that we really value your support to UEL.

News from the Chartered Management Institute: Professionalism pays: report reveals lifetime benefits of £152,000

New, independent economic impact analysis reveals that individuals with professional qualifications and membership stand to gain £152,000 in additional earnings, over the course of their career.  A recent study also uncovers wide benefits to the public purse, as professionally qualified individuals deliver higher tax revenues for the UK Exchequer.

students

Led by the Chartered Management Institute, the research was commissioned by eight of the UK’s leading professional bodies and is based on analysis of data for six consecutive quarters of the Labour Force Survey.

Key findings include:

The report shows that professional training and development is a key lever of support for the Government’s Skills Strategy.  Together, the eight Institutes deliver over 50,000 qualifications per year and, in line with Government plans to “ensure employers have the right skills to support the success of their business”, the majority of ‘students’ undertake qualifications while remaining in employment.

The report also highlights how professional qualifications are ‘open access’, ensuring that individuals are able to build transferable skills no matter what their previous qualification level has been.  By demonstrating that professional qualifications are undertaken across a range of age groups, and are split evenly by gender, the study shatters the myth that professionalism is elitist.

Against this backdrop, the eight professional bodies are collectively calling for the creation of a Professional Skills Council.  The aim is to create greater value for the UK Commission for Employment & Skills by raising demand for professional and higher-level skills across the 25 Sector Skills Councils and identifying gaps and shortages of professional skills across a range of industries.

Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute, commented: “With 70 per cent of the 2020 workforce already in employment, the prosperity of the nation is dependent on up-skilling and updating knowledge.  The creation of a Professional Skills Council would deliver significant value by simultaneously highlighting employer need, raising employer ambition and encouraging UK organisations to make strategic investments in the development of their teams.  After all, if employers think competent people are expensive, they should take a moment to think about the cost of incompetence.”
