This page is dedicated to members of the MBA Group. The group was established in 2007 to provide networking opportunities, career development, news and listings for MBA graduates. The group meets a few times a year at MBA events and members can also keep in touch with each other through enewsletter and this listings page.
One of our Business School graduates has returned to his alma mater in style, sponsoring a new bi-annual award aimed at inspiring current and future students to emulate his impressive achievements.
Martin Slark graduated with an MBA from UEL in 1993 and has since gone on to become CEO and Vice-Chairman of Molex Incorporated, a leading global manufacturer of electronic systems, switches and application tooling based in Illinois, USA.
After visiting UEL Docklands campus last year, Martin announced Molex’s sponsorship of the new prize for best student on UEL’s MBA programmes. The prize will be awarded bi-annually to both part-time and full-time students.
Martin said: “My University of East London MBA was truly a unique and valuable learning experience that enabled me to broaden my knowledge of many aspects of business. I learned a great deal from my teachers and fellow students, and fourteen years later, many of them are still my friends.
“I'm extremely happy to be in a position to return and facilitate this sponsorship, which aims to ensure that current and future generations of UEL Business School students are inspired to achieve their ambitions."
Martin began his career with Molex in 1976 and has worked for the company in Europe, the U.S. and Asia. He was responsible for starting the Molex entities in Hong Kong, China, India, South Africa, Malaysia and Thailand.
As President of the Far East South Region from 1988 to 1994, Martin completed his MBA by flexible distance learning, visiting UEL during the year for intensive tutorials and assessment. He became President of the Americas Region from 1994 to 1999, a Director of the company in 2000, President in 2001, and CEO and Vice-Chairman in 2005.
Ian Bathgate, Programme Leader for UEL’s MBA programmes, said: “We are extremely proud to include Martin among our alumni and very grateful for Molex’s generous sponsorship of our new MBA award.
"At UEL, we aim to all of our inspire our students with the requisite skills and ambition to succeed. Martin provides a wonderful role model, and there is simply no better person to be associated with our award for best MBA student.”
Following on from a highly successful pilot programme that ran for the first time last year, the Business School have just secured an additional three year relationship with the City consulting firm KPMG.
As part of this relationship, KPMG fund a prize for the best project on the MBA programme. The project is based around a case study that KPMG supply from their actual real-life consulting practice that they have encountered very recently. In this way, our students get to work on a real-life case that they know has been the basis of an actual consulting project that has proved challenging to KPMG's own professional consultants.
Our MBA students act as and gain experience as a consultant working on this case (from the confines of UEL), including being able to query the client (from KPMG) and presenting final findings to the KPMG client.
The best project is awarded a trophy, £500 and most importantly an attractive experience for future employers.

Professor McDonald gave a superb master class on bringing marketing to the Board room last week. The theme of the lecture was the failure of the marketing community to get to grips with real shareholder value added, having taken account of the time value of money, the cost of capital and the risks inherent in their strategies, is the real reason why so few companies have a marketing person on their board. This is also why marketing is thought of in terms of T-shirts and money off. The session introduced a fully researched, tried and tested methodology for CEOs to assess quantitatively whether their plans will create or destroy shareholder value added. The purpose is very straightforward: to give CEOs the ability to hold their marketers to account.
The event was well attended by current MBA and MSc Marketing students as well as MBA Alumni and staff. The lecture itself was informative and thought provoking and delivered in an interactive manner in professor McDonalds own inimitable style. A lively Q&A session took place after the lecture which progressed over lunch! More such sessions will be planned next year by the Business School.

Over 100 MBA students and graduates gathered on 1st March for the launch of the Alumni MBA Group.
The group has been formed to give MBA graduates networking, career and professional development opportunities.

It will also give current students a chance to meet our MBA graduates and learn from their experiences.
The evening featured a practical and informative presentation by Jonathan Swan, UEL Governor and Director of Operis TRG Ltd, on ‘How to get into the City’. The attendees were given valuable tips and advice from someone who has worked in the City for over 15 years.
The attendees then had chance to network with each other over refreshments.
The event was well attended by students, graduates and also the MBA lecturers and programme leaders. Ian Bathgate, MBA programme leader said:
“We need these type of events for our students and alumni. Networking is key to a person’s professional development. This will be the first event of many and I strongly recommend that you come back and spread the word to your colleagues.”
Feedback from those who attended the event was that it was extremely useful and the first event of its kind.
The MBA Group also has it's own listings website which will shortly
become an online community for its members. This can be viewed at http://www.uel.ac.uk/alumni/MBA.htm The website is currently being expanded.
If you would like to be listed, or are interested in future events, please send an email to alumni@uel.ac.uk with the subject heading 'MBA alumni'.
