Friday 11 December, Canary Wharf
The Corney & Barrow bar in Canary Wharf provided the venue for this year’s Alumni Network Christmas party, which was attended by approximately 100 Network members and current UEL staff.
Guests began arriving at 6.30pm and the party was in full swing shortly thereafter. They were able to pit their wits against each other in a special UEL-themed Christmas quiz, and Santa was also on hand to give out presents. Many guests stayed long into the evening in order to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and generally enjoy some festive fun.
The Alumni Network Christmas party provides our graduates with an opportunity to socialise with fellow alumni and learn about news and developments at UEL – all within an informal and festive party setting. This year’s event was our fourth, and is becoming more popular every year.
The Development & Alumni Office team very much hope to see you at one or more of our events in 2010 – details of which may be found at http://www.uel.ac.uk/alumni/events/index.htm. In the meantime we wish you all the best for the New Year.
School of Law, Monday 7 December 2009
On the evening of Monday 7 December the University welcomed High Court judge The Honourable Mrs Justice Dobbs, DBE to deliver before an audience of approximately 100 alumni, students and staff a lecture entitled, ‘Do our judges reflect the society of today? Judicial diversity: facts, theories and perceptions’.
During the course of her presentation Dame Linda spoke about her own professional experiences, as well as the principles behind promoting greater equality in the UK judicial system and the various methods through which this objective may be achieved. Members of the audience were then invited to share with her their own thoughts on equality and the law, as well as the ways in which all forms of equality could be better promoted within the UK legal system. At the reception which followed guests were able to take advantage of an opportunity to make new contacts and discuss their ideas and experiences.
Dame Linda Dobbs is the most senior minority ethnic judge in the UK. Before being appointed to the High Court in 2004 she was a leading barrister, specialising in criminal law. She was named Queen’s Counsel in 1998 and became Chair of the Criminal Bar Association in 2003.
The event was organised by the Development & Alumni Office in conjunction with UEL’s School of Law and Mentor & Equalities Unit. In 2010 the Development & Alumni Office will be working with all of UEL’s academic schools to deliver a wide ranging programme of events for our alumni. Details of forthcoming Alumni Network events are publicised in our publications and on our website – http://www.uel.ac.uk/alumni/events/index.htm
Wednesday 25 November, Stratford Campus
More than thirty students, staff and graduates of the University’s occupational and organisational psychology courses gathered at its Stratford campus on Wednesday 25 November in order to share professional experiences and practices, meet old friends and make new ones.
The guest speaker, Dr Rainer Kurz, who is a psychologist and Directorat Saville Consulting (www.savilleconsulting.com), delivered a very interesting presentation on the theory and application of personality psychometrics. He focused on the development of psychometrics questions, the ‘Big 5’ and ‘Great 8’ models, before turning to consider modern trends such as the use of internet questionnaires, the role of preferences and potential aspects, and the development of the ‘Wave’ model of assessing workers’ motives, talents, environmental fit and competency.
‘It was a great evening and a chance to meet old students, catch up with their career and life changes, and share what we have been doing at UEL. Many people were amazed by the changes to the Stratford campus, which is now really taking shape with the new Conference and IT Centre and Cass School buildings’, said Dr Jonathan Passmore, Senior Lecturer at the School of Psychology.
This was the second reunion in as many years, and a third is being planned for the second half of 2010.
Wednesday 28 and Saturday 31 October
In October of this year a delegation from the University of East London travelled to India to reunite with UEL alumni in Hyderabad and Delhi. Dr Fariba Salehi, Head of Development & Alumni, and Professor DC Chitral Wijeyesekera from the School of Computing, Information Technology and Engineering represented the University, and Bill Lall - entrepreneur, honorary graduate of UEL and founder of the Delhi branch of our Alumni Network joined the delegates in Delhi.
They first travelled to Hyderabad for a dinner held at the Taj Bhanjara Hotel on Wednesday 28 October, where they were joined by fifteen alumni and their guests. Then, on Saturday 31 October, they were joined by twenty-two alumni at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Delhi. The meetings were both joyful and fulfilling reunions of UEL graduates, whereby they explored how best they can advance the Alumni Network in India throughout the year.
Those in attendance were able to meet friends old and new, learn about the latest news and developments from the University, and share their views on how to best shape the future of our Indian alumni relations activities.
The Development & Alumni Office wishes to express its sincere thanks to Bill Lall for his continuing generosity and support for UEL and its Alumni Network. We hope to build on this successful trip and continue the expansion of the Alumni Network’s presence in India through further events in 2010. Details will be made available on our website - www.uel.ac.uk/alumni - and in our newsletters.
Thursday 22 October, Wilson Williams Gallery, Hackney, London
We are pleased to bring you news of our second event in the Creative Arts Industries Series which took place at a venue off campus in the autumn. After the success of last years event held at the Mile End Arts Pavilion which featured performances, speakers and an exhibition, we held the follow on event at an art gallery in the heart of London’s artistic district – Hackney.

The Wilson and Williams Gallery is run by Debra Wilson and Chiara Williams. Debra is a UEL alumnus (2003 MA Fine Art), curator and artist, who opened the gallery with business partner Chiara Wilson in 2008. Debra and Chiara were the key note speakers of the evening. Their talk followed a welcome from the UEL Alumni Network and Pete Cobb, Dean of the School of Architecture and Visual Arts. The audience was extremely interested to hear about how they set up the gallery, their time at university, their first year in business and what their plans are for the future.
The talks, networking and mingling took place against the backdrop of WW Gallery’s latest exhibition – ‘Is there Anybody There’? The exhibition addresses the history of the building the gallery occupies. The gallery was a former crack den and has a history of dilapidation, violence and paranormal activity. “This once rat-infested East London squat was razed to the ground, not once, but twice, as if in an effort to purge itself. Despite being resurrected as a des res in 2003, the new owners were disturbed by strange goings-on and had it 'ghost-busted' before its reincarnation as WW Gallery”.
The atmospheric exhibition is about the unexplained and 'things that go bump in the night', and show takes in Halloween, Bonfire Night and the gallery's first anniversary.
The artists in the exhibition include Deutsche Bank and Saatchi collected Liane Lang, Jerwood Prize selected Annabel Tilley and Venice Biennale exhibited Eva Lis, Jarik Jongman, Lorraine Clarke, Stephanie Wehowski, Enzo Marra and Natasha Bird, plus special guests. Since it opened, WW Gallery has achieved well publicised and successful exhibitions and has taken part in the 2009 Venice Beinnale.
The event was attended by students and graduates working or studying in the creative industries. Attendees could network with fellow students and UEL graduates, other artists, architects, gallery directors and lecturers.
One guest, Chris Johnson (1992 BSc Hons Manufacturing Systems Engineering) said “It was a though-provoking evening that I’m really glad I came along to, totally unexpected venue and passionate curators – really interesting to listen to the story behind the location and artwork. Well done to everyone involved in the organising”

Become an alumni group representative. Represent alumni in your country or region by being the organiser of an international group.
Work experience in the Alumni Office. Could you spare some time each week to help administer the alumni network?
The Alumni Office would like to feature our volunteers, show a profile of them on the website and other publicity material. In addition, if you run your own business, or would like to let others know about what you are doing/working on – we would love to help by sharing that information with other alumni.
