Programme summary for BA Dance: Urban Practice

You will study a wide range of dance styles including hip-hop and street, contemporary techniques, and world forms such as Capoeira, Kathak, Bollywood and West African styles.

There are opportunities to focus on performance and choreography within a range of contexts including theatre, site-specific dance and media. The programme also includes the delivery of community dance and a compulsory placement module gives you the opportunity to work with communities, dance companies and dance development agencies across London.

Teachers with diverse dance experience and community practitioners offer you dance and research skills to appreciate and create site-specific work, fusion choreography, personal stories in performance, community focused dance work, and more. As a student, you get the chance to practice a range of contemporary and hip-hop techniques including street styles, release, contact and world dance forms, and to understand and appreciate the rich history and theory of performance practice. You will create dances that focus on contemporary political and aesthetic issues, bringing in your own history to dance in a multicultural, multiethnic location. Community contacts like East London Dance and Dance Umbrella will give you many opportunities to become successful dance practitioners and teachers.

To become successful artists, you will learn to create dances that are meaningful, personal, hard-hitting and contemporary. Over three years you will develop skills that allow you to be successful practitioners, writers, choreographers, teachers, policy makers and bodywork instructors. About the programme

This programme offers a unique role to develop individual dance practice through the development of a range of technical, theoretical and choreographic skills and a critical examination of dance practice within an urban setting. Building on the diversity of East London, the programme offers an approach to creativity, technical development, historical knowledge and performance in a range of styles including hip hop, non-western practices, and contemporary dance.

2-subject degrees

You can combine this programme with a range of other subjects as part of a 2-subject degree. Popular combinations include Dance: Urban Practice and Theatre Studies, and Dance: Urban Practice with Community Arts Practice.

Programme structure

Degrees at the University of East London are modular. Full time dance students will study three modules each semester (or term) and there are 2 semester per year. Part time students will study up to four 20 credit modules per year. The BA (Hons) Dance is a 3 year full time programme & 5 years part time. Dance students will have the opportunity to transfer to linked programmes and flexibility in module choices.

Career opportunities

Dance graduates go on to employment in careers such as teaching, dancing, arts administration or choreography, as dance artists, workshop deliverers or collaborative dance artists. Many undertake further study or training in dance-related fields.

Support

All students are allocated a personal tutor throughout the programme. Our university also provides extensive support for students through residential/student finance advice/careers advice/study skills development and IT/learning resources. A wide variety of professional artists will be involved in the delivery of the programme. Skills labs and study support are available on the Docklands campus. Students in receipt of Disabled Students' allowance are allocated a specialist Learning Support assistant and additional ICT support dependent upon an assessment of their needs. The programme is connected to a network of professional artists, working theatres & organisations.

Admission

The minimum requirements for entry for Level 1 entry is 240 UCAS tariff points from: A/AS level (Including 2 A2 passes), GNVQ, AVCE, Scottish Highers, International Baccalaureate. European Baccalaureate, BTEC / SCOTEC Diploma, Relevant Access Course or successful completion of the Level 0. Other qualifications, including overseas, may be considered.

Applicants who do not fulfil the admission requirements for Level 1 may be considered for entry into Level 0. Applicants should have 120 UCAS tariff points from GCE A2 or equivalent.

Students applying to this programme will be expected to demonstrate a specific interest in this area of study and should have a commitment to engaging in a study of a variety of dance styles. Applicants will be invited for interview and will be asked to participate in a dance workshop with other candidates.
We also welcome applicants from mature students who do not have formal qualifications but may have relevant experience. Overseas Qualifications

The number of overseas qualifications which are accepted for entry are too numerous to list, but you can get advice from the British Council or our admissions unit on 020 8223 2835. You must be able to understand and express yourself in both written and spoken English and some evidence e.g. For level 1 entry a TOEFL score of 550 or an IELTS score of 6.0 (no skill level below 5) and for Level 0 entry an IELTS score of 5.5 (no skill level below 5) would be required.
