Programme summary for BA (Hons) Animation

This programme is currently offered as a minor or joint honours degree only, the programme enables you to develop a deep understanding of the language, methods and skills of animation. Focusing on storyboarding and narrative, the programme enables conceptual and practical development of skills for scriptwriting, character development, 2D and 3D animation, stop motion, digital postproduction, compositing and effects.

About the programme

Our degree in animation is only available in combination with another subject in a 2-subject Combined Honours degree. It enables you to develop a deep understanding of the language, methods and skills of animation. Focusing on storyboarding and narrative, the programme enables conceptual and practical development of skills for scriptwriting, character development, 2D and 3D animation, stop motion, digital postproduction, compositing and effects.

2-subject degrees

Animation must be combined with another subject as part of a 2-subject degree. Popular combinations include Animation and Computer Games Design, Illustration and Animation, Graphic Design and Animation.

Programme structure

The programme can be studied full-time for 3 years or for 5 years in part-time mode. It has a modular structure that enables students to study it as a Joint or Minor honours programme. This allows combinations to be built with its sister programmes in Digital Arts and Visual Communication and also other programmes in the School of Architecture and The Visual Arts or within UEL as part of our Combined Honours menu.

Career opportunities

Career opportunities are available in a range of fields, including video, film, photography, computer and web-based media, publishing and graphics.

Support

The programme provides strong personal tutor guidance and professional advice related to the practice. Visiting artists, designers and other professional practitioners regularly visit the programme and study trips to working environments are an important component. UEL provides a comprehensive range of support services for students which includes: residential/student finance advice/careers advice/study skills development/IT/learning resources.

Admission

Students are selected on their suitability for the programme by a portfolio interview. Applicants would normally have completed an Art and Design Foundation, GAD, or an appropriate BTEC, GNVQ or Access programme of at least one year's duration prior to joining the programme. Students with other relevant professional or life experience will also be considered.
