Brief biography

Simon originally graduated from Kent University, before completing postgraduate study in the School of Education at the University of Greenwich, and becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, through which he aims to develop research into pedagogic practice with emergent artists – informed by his own extensive practice in the areas of performance, poetry, and film making.

Activities and responsibilities

Module leadership; developing improved online employer links through a grant from the Creative Communities Development Fund; lecturing in the areas of documentary film, journalism, creative writing, and creative industries; supporting the Writing Centre.

Areas of Interest/Summary of Expertise

  • Journalism. Simon worked for several years as a freelance journalist and runs the NUJ-backed Pathways to Journalism course at Wandsworth Prison.
  • Documentary Film: Simon has made two broadcast documentaries, and is currently working on an interactive documentary project with the charity Art Saves Lives.
  • Creative Writing: Simon is a published poet and short story writer; and former Writer in Residence at Norwich Prison.
  • Performance: Over the years Simon has performed in venues ranging from the Leicester Square Theatre to the ICA, and co-ran the influential live arts cabaret club The Cupboard (“The most unusual show in town” Time Out)
  • Theatre: Simon has had one of his plays performed at a London fringe theatre, and has directed two short plays by a writer he worked with in prison.
