Brief biography

I am a Technical Associate responsible for the Casting and Metal workshop. I did a Fine Art B.A. and M.A. and have a knowledge of a wide range of sculptural techniques. I share this knowledge of materials and processes as I advise and assist students making three dimmensional work. Since moving into the AVA building I have been working with Achitecture students as much as Fine Art students. Most of the skills I have are traditional, rooted in a pre digital age but I am very interested in in how they might combine with CAD technology. I strongly believe that traditional skills are still wanted and needed in a modern university. Workshops are vital learning and teaching environments  and my role is to help make them function in this way.

I am also a practising artist and a part time Professional Doctorate student.

Areas of Interest/Summary of Expertise

My role as Technical Associate is based on a wide ranging knowledge of sculpural history and practice. I have a good knowledge of casting techniques and a working knowledge of ceramics, carving, welding and woodwork. As an artist I am also interested in drawing and photography and I make work that combines 2D and 3D elements. My role as Technical Associate emphasises craft skills but my practice as an artist extends beyond craft. I strive to develop a deeper understanding the  creative drive as well as the context in which my work can be understood.
