I have a BA Hons in Fashion Design from what was then Newcastle Polytechnic and is now Northumbria University, graduating in 1980. I worked as a designer for the High Street multiples before joining UEL as a part time lecturer in 1985. During that time I also worked as a freelance designer /pattern cutter through the Design Council and for various companies and designers.
An area of my expertise is draping on the stand and I have held workshops at the Victoria and Albert Museum inconjuction with several of the Fashion in Motion exhibitions and the Queen Maud exhibition.
My time at UEL is fully committed to teaching and learning, I have made several Independant Learning videos that support the skills relating to the design modules on which I teach and I run a summer school as part of our widening participation in association with the Fashion charity "Fashion Awareness Direct" (FAD) .
I am first year tutor and have personal tutor responsibilites. I am also one of the industrial placement co-ordinators and support preparations for Graduate Fashion Week.
Over many years I have developed an interest in 19th century corsetry. I have made detailed studies of the corset looking at the cut and construction as well as the historical context; travelling around the country to costume museums and spending time in the archives compiling detailed observational drawings and measurements from which I have produced patterns. This personal obsession is linked to my interest in creative pattern cutting and pushing garment design beyond the confines of the body. This has fed directly into one of the level two modules for which I am responsible.
Took part in the Fashion "Pink Practice" Research Group Symposium and exhibition 2009.
