UEL’s second year urban dance students descended on Stratford Circus today (Tuesday, 24 April) for the start of Coll!de, a five day festival comprising a series of dynamic showcases intended, as one student put it, ‘to promote just how amazing urban culture is!’
The student programming team, who put the event together, have managed to bring in some of the most respected pioneers from the world of Hip Hop including headliner Issac Baptiste, aka Turbo. StyleFest 2010 champion and a semi-finalist in last year's Got to Dance on Sky TV. Turbo is highly respected for his ‘Popping’ and ‘House’ technique.
Alice Walker, a UEL student and one of the key organisers of the event, said: “As second years, we have worked really hard through fundraising to enable this festival to be a success. We are delighted to have such top artists onboard and feel we are really showcasing the talent we have at UEL.”
The students felt it was important for people to know not just about the dance moves, but about urban dance culture, so as well as the showcases, there are also discussions and workshops taking place throughout the week.
Alice added: “We have recognition from Pineapple Dance Studio's to Throw Down(one of London's biggest Hip-Hop events), so we are not just being supported by the urban community, but also the mainstream. We are laying the foundations for this inspiring event, which will grow year on year in popularity.”
