UEL academic Andrew Branch and author Daryl Easlea will be presenting a series of events from this Friday, Listen to This: a Celebration of Popular Music, centered on the importance of popular music to personal and cultural identity.

The programme comprises a series of four connected talks at Chalkwell Hall in Southend-on-Sea, that bring together musicians, writers and critics, culminating in live concert in July. The first of the events takes place tomorrow featuring legendary Dr Feelgood guitarist, Wilko Johnson, speaking alongside Essex-based musician and author of the acclaimed account of the 1970s pub rock scene, No Sleep Till Canvey Island, Will Birch. They will be joined by UEL academic and former journalist, Dr Andrew Calcutt.

Andrew Branch said: “Our aim is to explore the state of contemporary music making from the perspective of those who produce it, consume it and write about it. In so doing we will reflect on past era-defining moments in popular music with a local South-East Essex perspective. There will be music, film, presentations, live performances, dancing, and healthy debate. Most of all, it will be an informative and entertaining night out.”

Tickets for each event cost £5.00, available from www.metalculture.com or by calling 01702 470700.

For a complete run-down of events please contact Sean Mcloughlin on sean@metalculture.com / 01702 470700 or visit the Metal Culture website.
