UEL academic and award-winning director premieres new film

Set in the Basque country, the film is a deeply personal tale, reconstructing stories from Jill’s own past, following the wanderings of a young woman on both sides of the Spanish/French border as she moves towards her violent fate.
Jill says: “The Border Crossing is first a story of violence against myself, but also, as the film expands, the story of the continuing violence that is part of the Basque identity. Produced for my PhD research into the representation of memory and identity in experimental documentary films, I am extremely grateful for the UEL funding which allowed me to make this film.”
Jill’s career began with the short feature, I’m in Heaven, about a Jewish woman who, after an unhappy marriage, never leaves her high-rise flat and has retreated into a pastiche of Jewish ritual life. The film went on to win the prize for best fiction film at the Spanish Huesca Film Festival in 1990.
