Dr.Subramaniam Arunachalam PhD, PGC, BEng (Hons), BSc, Dip(Tech), MIEE is a senior lecturer in the Product Design Group. Before joining University of East London, Dr.Arunachalam was employed in Coventry University (UK) and University of Hertfordshire, UK. He holds a Doctorate in Manufacturing Engineering and a Honours degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. Dr.Arunachalam is a Visiting Professor and Visiting Scholar at several universities abroad. He has many years of experience in teaching and developing course materials at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Operations Management, Lean Manufacturing, Quality Control, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Strategy and Management, Quality Management, Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing Simulation, Production Planning and Control, Total Quality Management, Project Management, Logistic Management and Quantitative Methods. Currently, he is also teaching in the Product Design and Product Development disciplines.
Dr.Arunachalam has extensive experience in delivering lectures and workshops in Production Management, Manufacturing Strategy and Manufacturing Management to senior managers of Ford Motor Company in UK and Germany as part University of East London's academic programmes. His expertise includes applying simulation techniques to optimize production and assembly systems through increased productivity and low-cost manufacturing techniques. Dr.Arunachalam has participated and contributed to the University of Oxford’s Operation Management and Manufacturing Strategy Faculty Programmes on teaching Operation Management to undergraduate, postgraduate students and post experience senior managers. He regularly participates in debates on topical issues in manufacturing industry organized by Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge. Dr.Arunachalam has been listed in the Marquis’s Who’s Who, Premier Edition 2009.
Dr.Arunachalam is a very active researcher. He has published more than 200 articles in high profile journals and peer-viewed conferences. He has presented many invited papers in international conferences. He has developed and delivered many short courses in Six Sigma, Productivity Improvement, Quality Management, Lean Manufacturing, Total Quality Management to many British, Indian and Malaysian SMEs. Dr.Arunachalam has made significant contribution in organizing international conferences. He serves on the board of scientific/international programme committee of many international conferences hosted in Australia, Finland, Helsinki, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan, Malaysia, UK, USA, Malaysia and China.
He is a referee and reviewer for many leading international scientific journals and is a full member of Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK. Dr.Arunachalam has given keynote speeches and invited lectures in many universities and institutions abroad. He has participated and contributed in many international panel discussions on the "Changing Trend of Manufacturing." He has received grants/awards/sponsorships from Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), British Council (UK) and International Scientific Committee of the European Commission. Dr.Arunachalam has supervised more than 200 undergraduate and postgraduate projects. He is also Director of Studies to a number of PhD students and examined more than 70 PhD theses.
Dr.Arunachalam has been a consultant for many small and medium sized companies (SMEs), large-scale manufacturing and service enterprises in the UK and abroad in Information and Production Systems Operations, Management and Implementation. He is keen on knowledge transfer and examples of the projects include productivity improvement using simulation techniques, designing quality management systems, implementation of lean systems, process reengineering, introduction of inventory control system and MRP systems. His industrial and research experiences also include market penetration analysis for manufacturing companies, product development,, optimizing outsourcing operations through supplier development and improving productivity through application of lean and lean sigma techniques.
Fields of research interest include flexible manufacturing cell design, quality control techniques, automation systems material requirement planning, lean manufacturing, six sigma quality issues, business process outsourcing, total quality management, business process reengineering, inventory management, manufacturing systems simulation, manufacturing strategy, worker training, material flow, value stream mapping, just-in-time, MRP, ERP, supply chain management, team value management , mass customization and product development.
