Brief biography

Ravindra Jayaratne obtained his Bachelor of Science of Engineering degree (Civil Engineering) with honours (BSc Eng Hons) from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 1998, and his Masters degree in Civil Engineering (MEng) from the National University of Singapore in 2001. He was employed as a civil engineer at Toa Corporation, Singapore from May-Sep 2001. In the same year, he was awarded the Japanese government scholarship (Monbukagakusho) to persue his PhD in Civil Engineering at Yokohama National University, Japan, working towards development of predictive models of suspended sediment concentration on sandy beaches and numerical simulation of cross-shore beach deformation, which he completed in 2004.

From 2005 until 2006, he was employed as a research engineer at the Lanka Hydraulic Institute (LHI), Sri Lanka, involving various coastal engineering projects and post-tsunami reconstruction. In Oct 2006 he has joined as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Centre for Coastal Dynamics and Engineering (C-CoDE) at University of Plymouth, UK, working on an EPSRC funded project (Fundamentals of Overtopping from Individual Violent Water-Wave Impacts - OVI). Since Oct 2008, he has been working as a lecturer in Civil Engineering at the University of East London.

Ravindra completed a PGCert in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education at UEL in September 2009.

He has written a number of journal and conference papers on various aspects of wave-structure interaction, hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes in coastal and river waters and disaster prevention mechanisms against tsunamis.

Ravindra has been selected as a reviewer for the 34th IAHR World Congress to be held in Brisbane, Australia from 26 June to 1 July 2011.
