A major output of an EPSRC study project was a set of concepts, approach and a distributed information system that facilitate virtual multi-disciplinary product development activities. The system was demonstrated in a pilot on an automobile engine within the automotive sector. Aspects of the concepts and tools were exploited by Rolls-Royce in USA through the co-author who is currently employed by them (Dr Neil Anderson - Rolls Royce - USA (neilanderson@arczip.com or neil@smail.info). Tangible benefits include decreased product turn-around times.

The paper presents a new approach to design for automation in order to shorten assembly costs and cycle times by analysing the product design using reasoning techniques and production rules against targeted criteria, then provide designers with design alternatives / suggestions to further improve the design for automation. Results have been tested on a pilot study using an Ericsson Mobile Phone Handset and a Scientific Calculator (Ericsson Mobile Communications Ltd, Lawn Rd Industrial Estate, Carlton-in-Lindrick, Worksop, S81 9LB - Shaun Hopkinson-shaun.hopkinson@eml.ericsson.se. The pilot study showed Improvements of around 7-10% in assembly costs and cycle times.

Results from a project (Ref:CHBN/007/00052C) entitled "ICT for Sustainable Development in Electrical /Electronics Goods Manufacture" was a framework for collaborative sustainable product development (CSPD) which enables designers to work cooperatively and address sustainability from a holistic view (environmental, economical and social dimensions) at early design stage. The CSPD was piloted by the industrial collaborators on a mobile communication station and tangible benefits such as better integration of design process into a collaborative environment, resulted of reduction in; product development lead time, cost, and wasted resources by at least 10%, ICER - Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling- Clair Snow ws@icer.org.uk / cs@icer.org.uk.
