University educated and awarded BEng (1982), MEng (1984) and PhD  (1991) in China, PhD at Liverpool University (1994) and PGCE at University of East London (1999). Worked as an engineer and lecturer in China, researcher at Dundee University and Liverpool University, research associate at Loughborough University (1994-1998), joined University of East London in 1998, and was appointed visiting professor by a Chinese university in 2002.
