Screen Resolution

The majority of this web site's new pages will readjust to and work at all of the most commonly used screen resolutions: 1024 x 768 pixels, 800 x 600 pixels and 640 x 480 pixels - and indeed should work at almost any likely setting. Arguably they will look their best at a display setting of 1024 x 768 pixels, since that is the benchmark they were designed to, but this is a matter for individual users to decide on.

Display settings may be altered through the control panel of your computer or from the system tray at the bottom right of the screen (depending on the operating system). Make a note of your original settings in case you want to restore them. If in doubt seek assistance from someone who is suitably qualified or experienced.

Cross Browser Compatibility

The University of East London's web site is designed to be viewed with version 4 (and above) web browsers. It has been thoroughly tested with different versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape and should function correctly in both browsers. There have been a significant number of Netscape issues to overcome though and it is conceivable that some of these may continue to arise. Occasionally for example a page may fail to reload and display correctly when the Netscape window is resized, or may sometimes present wrongly when first loaded - the solution is to use the "Reload" button on the browser toolbar to force a further reload. Internet Explorer is therefore recommended for viewing this site. It has also been tested for use with PC and Mac versions and with different systems.

Additionally, it is designed to degrade in such a way that the page content remains accessible and the site navigable, when viewed with earlier web browser versions - including text only ones. The experience is not then as intended, but the site is still accessible and usable. Multimedia where employed is optional or incorporated so that the page will still function without it.

Visitors using a version 3 web browser (or a Lynx text browser) will find a message towards the bottom of each page, saying "IF THIS TEXT APPEARS ON THE SCREEN YOU ARE ADVISED TO UPDATE YOUR WEB BROWSER". You are not obliged to do so, but will have a richer experience of the site if you do.
