In 1998, I qualified as a dentist from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. I worked as a dentist for four years and then began a MSc in Dental Public Health at the Queen Mary University of London in 2003. My interest in health research began in my year at QMUL. My dissertation for my master’s degree was on Ethnicity and Dental Health Access and it examined how ethnicity can be a barrier to accessing dental health care services; by evaluating a Community Dental Access Programme (CDAP) in East London.
I am currently registered for a PhD in Public Health under the supervision of Professor Adrian Renton and Dr Elena Schmidt. Prior to starting my MPhil/PhD, I worked in Dental Public Health and Oral Health Promotion in Mid Sussex NHS Primary Care Trust. My research interests are Public Health, Health Promotion and Health Services Research especially as they affect ethnic minority and marginalised groups. I worked with the IHHD group to develop the Community Research Network (CRN) and conduct studies among minority ethnic communities in East London.
In my PhD research, I am evaluating the community engagement process and how it impacts the design and delivery of health promotion interventions within the Lottery funded Well London Programme. I continue to work in Dental Public Health within the National Health Service.
