Dr. Elena SchmidtHaving been first trained in education and later on in public health and policy analysis, Dr Schmidt has over 15 years of experience in public health, health education and international development. Throughout her career she has worked for government authorities, international agencies, academic institutions and community-organisations. She has a wide range of national and overseas experience through the programmes in Western and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Africa. She has worked for and with the UK Department for International Development, World Health Organisation, United Nations Children’s Fund, and the European Commission. She has an extensive experience in a wide range of public health issues, including maternal and child health, family planning, prevention of non-communicable disease, sustainable development and control of HIV/AIDS. Between 2003 and 2006 she worked at Imperial College London, where she was Scientific Coordinator and later the acting Scientific Director of the DFID-funded programme "Knowledge for action in HIV/AIDS".
In March 2006, she joined the University of East London first as a senior lecturer and the head of the MSc programmes in public health and health promotion. In November 2008 she was appointed as the Director for Research and Evaluation at the Institute for Health and Human Development. During her time at UEL she worked for a number of research projects focusing on the impact of structural determinants on health in deprived communities in London. She is also the head of the team delivering a population survey in 20 deprived areas under the Well London programme.
