UEL 2012 print exhibition opens at the FSA

UEL students and staff were invited to submit works in any print process which interpreted 'the Olympics'. The competition attracted a large number of entries and the judging panel, chaired by Richard Wilson RA (Visiting Research Professor at UEL), selected 14 works for their originality, flair and technical skill.
Two prizes were awarded; the Trinity Buoy Wharf Prize of £100 to Danny Augustine for ‘Olympic Pool at Helsinki in 1962’ and the FabPad Prize of 5m of printing to Marcin Reznik for ‘Olympics 2012’.
Fine Arts student Danny was presented with his prize at the event by John Burton from Trinity Buoy Wharf, who said: “The impress thing about this print is that, not only was it the first print we saw, but it’s also consistent with his style of work. While also having something that chimed with the Olympics it’s also got something personal behind it.”
The work shows Jean Boiteux helping his father out of an Olympic pool in Helsinki in July 1952. After Boiteux won the 400 meter freestyle, his father became so excited that he fell into the pool. Danny, who will take up a place at the Royal College of Art in October, explained that he found the expression of the relationship between father and son inspirational and hoped that his own father felt the same about his achievements.
Patrick McGhee said of the event: “I’m proud to be here today to acknowledge the quality of work by students, supported by ADI and Catherine Harper. This is a real source of pride for UEL.”
The 2012 Print Exhibition runs at the Financial Services Authority from May to August 2012 and will then move to SportsDock at the University of East London in September.
