Olympic Park (2013)

Olympic and Paralympics Legacy

There’s no single definition of the Olympic Legacy. The years that follow 2012 will see a tapestry of projects, with a common theme of improving lives and creating new opportunities.

Many of the legacy’s sporting projects will be based at the Olympic Park, while others will be concentrated in communities. In other words, the Parkland will be a hub for sport in East London - with spokes of every shape and size that reach out across the region.

UEL is committed to playing a serious role in the developing legacy

As the only university that was mentioned in the London Olympic bid, we’ve been preparing for 2013 since the Games were first awarded.

In practical terms, that means supporting talent and participation: widening access to sports facilities, sponsoring local sports clubs, and creating scholarships and bursaries for students with a talent for sport.

Meanwhile, we’ve also registered our intention to access the Olympic Park, as a space for teaching, sports training and community engagement.

Ultimately, our aim is to support the living legacy by calling on the expertise and facilities at our disposal.

Supporting a wider objective

If sport is the main theme of the Olympic legacy, the end goal is regeneration. The projects and initiatives that will animate the Parkland and energise communities are designed to write the next chapter in the story of East London.

The real legacy will be economic prosperity, and a quality of life that rivals other London boroughs.

Today, specific details of Parkland projects are still emerging. But it’s clear that the world of 2014 will be very different from 2004.
