Meet UEL's Olympic and Paralympic Hopefuls

Gemma Gibbons


  • Talent: Judo
  • Studying: Exercise Science and Health

Gemma competes in the 78kg category and has represented GB at Senior World and European Championships. She has won BUCS titles as well as bronze medals at the World University Games and the European U23 Championships. Gemma is a member of Team GB for the London 2012 Games, winning a silver medal in the women's 78kg final. Gemma completed her undergraduate degree in Coaching Science at UEL in 2011 and continued her studies in Exercise Science and Health at UEL.

Sophie Cox

  • Talent: Judo
  • Studying: Strength and Conditioning

Sophie competed for GB at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, before temporarily retiring from the sport.  Sophie made her return by winning bronze at both the European Championships and the Amsterdam Grand Prix in 2011. She was also picked for Team GB and participated in the London 2012 Olympics.  

 

Ali Jawad

Ali Jawad

  • Talent: Powerlifting
  • Studying: Excercise Science and Health

Before taking up powerlifting Ali competed at an International level in judo. In early 2012 he won the British Powerlifting title for the seventh time, and his performance on the day (181kg) was a British Paralympic record in the 60kg weight category. Ali competed for Team GB Powerlifting at London 2012 Paralympic Games and came fourth place.
