UEL Honorary Mark Hunter (Team GB London 2012)

Mark Hunter

  • Sport: Rowing
  • Award: Honorary Masters of Science

Mark was awarded a Gold in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing for Lightweight Double Scull (stroke). He was selected to represent Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games in London where he won a Silver medal in the Lightweight Men's Double Scull race.  Mark is the reigning Olympic Champion in the lightweight men's double scull and was awarded an MBE in the 2009 New Year's Honours list in recognition of his achievement. Mark was awarded an Honorary Masters in Science from UEL in 2009.


UEL Honorary Christine Ohuruogo (Team GB London 2012)

Catherine Onhuruogo

  • Award: Honorary Doctorate in Arts

Christine Ohuruogu is Britain’s only reigning track and field Olympic champion, having won gold with one of her trademark late charges at Beijing 2008. That victory completed a golden two years for Ohuruogu having won the World Championship title in 2007. She was also selected to represent Team GB at London 2012 where she won a Silver medal in the 400 m.  Christine was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Arts from UEL in 2009.


UEL Honorary Ade Adepitan

Ade Adepitan

  • Award: Honorary Doctor of the University

Ade Adepitan MBE , is a well known television presenter and wheelchair basketball player. He won the Bronze Medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. Ade was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award and Honorary Doctorate in 2010 at UEL . Ade was also recently a torch bearer for London 2012. UEL Honorary Aslie Pitter MBE

  • Award: Honorary Doctorate in Arts

Aslie Pitter MBE is a British Footballer and founder of one of Britain's  first gay football clubs which has been sucessfully running for the last 21 years called Stonewall FC. He has been a prominent figure in combating homophobia, leading to his MBE in 2010 and his Honourary Doctorate in Arts in 2011.

 


UEL Honorary Graham Gooch OBE

Graham Gooch

  • Sport: Cricket
  • Award: Honorary Doctorate in Arts

Graham Gooch OBE, is a former top class cricket player and former captain of England. He was one of most prolific run scorers that England has ever seen. He received an Honorary Doctor of Arts at the School of Architecture in 2011.

 


 UEL Honorary Hope Powell CBE (Team GB- Women's Football Coach, London 2012)

  • Award: Honorary Doctorate in Arts

Hope Powell CBE, is a former England Footballer who is currently the coach of the England Women’s National Football team currently coaching Team GB at London 2012.  She was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award and Honorary Doctorate of Arts at UEL in 2011.


 UEL Honorary John Amaechi

  • Award: Honorary Doctorate in Arts

John Ameachi is a former famous NBA player, whose areas of expertise are endless as he is a psychologist, Author and social entrepreneur. He also holds a post as director for the  LOCOG Diversity Board. He recieved an Honorary Doctorate in Arts in 2011. He was also recently a torch bearer for London 2012.

 


UEL Honorary Sir Geoff Hurst MBE

  • Award: Honorary Masters of Arts

Sir Geoff Hurst MBE, is a former England Footballer, famous for his hat trick in the world cup final over Germany in 1966. His contribution to English Football has not gone un-noticed as he is one of the few footballers to ever receive a Knighthood.  He was awarded an Honorary Master of the Arts at UEL in November 2010.


UEL Honorary Lord Sebastian Coe

Seb Coe

  • Sport: Athletics
  • Award: Honorary Doctorate in Science

Lord Sebastian Coe KBE, is an Olympian who participated in the 1500m and 800m, he won four Olympic medals. He played a prominent role in the bid for London 2012 and is currently the chairmen of BOA. He was also recently a torchbearer, in his home town sheffield  for London 2012.


UEL Honorary Tessa Sanderson CBE

Tessa Sanderson

  • Sport: Athletics
  • Award: Honorary Doctor of the University 

Tessa Sanderson CBE , remains the only British woman ever to win an Olympic throwing gold medal, after her success in the Javelin at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games. She currently runs the ‘ Tessa Sanderson Sports Foundation & Academy’ which is based in Newham,  the Heart of London 2012, where she was also a torchbearer.


UEL Honorary Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson

  • Sport: Athletics/Wheelchair Basketball
  • Award: Lifetime Achievement Award and Honorary Masters of Arts
  •  

  • Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson is a Paralympian who has competed in both wheelchair Basketball and wheelchair Racing. She has won a total of 16 Paralympic medals of which 11 are gold medals. She was conferred the title of Baroness, in 2010 and she received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Honorary Masters of Arts in May 2011.  She was also recently a torchbearer for the Paralympics, London 2012.
